Recently I have tried burning some commercial DVDs with DVD decrpyter. Some of them are large, 7 or 8 GB. The store guy suggested I buy dual layer DVDs and my computer has double layer burner. But I still cant burn these large DVDs. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Have you tried using DVD Shrink to shrink the dvds that should work here is the link to download DVD Shrink

Don't waste your time with those DL discs, you can get most movies on a SL disc with no problems especially if you remove the menus and special features via Reuathor mode in DVD Shrink. The link is provided by Jozza to the download. Here is are some guides:
