I might get Nero recode and try that to see if its a software problem. Nero recode will do everything DVD Shrink does right? If so, I will try all of the above with Nero instead of DVD Shrink.

Hi.

Have you tried resetting the IDE channels and uninstalling the burners?

Try resetting the transfer modes for your IDE devices as follows:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Click the "+" beside DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on the name of your DVD burner and select Uninstall.
Click OK.

Still in Device Manager:

Click the "+" beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Right click on the Primary Channel and select Uninstall.
Click OK.
Right click on the Secondary Channel and select Uninstall.
Click OK.

Restart the system.

Here's a guide that may help if you get lost.

Do all applications run slow like word processing, internet, etc.?

If both burners do the same thing, I'm pretty sure the burner is not the problem. At this point I would consider backing up data, reformating the HDD and reinstalling the O/S from scratch. If that doesn't solve the problem, there is likely a motherboard issue of some sort. It may be the CPU headed south. It may be a bad IDE controller.

No I havn't tried resetting the ide channels. I have dbaned twice in the last month to try a remedy this so I know reformatting won't help.

No other programs run slow like that. Games, word, photoshop, etc.. The only programs that do this are dvd editing/encoding software. Its very strange. I built my system in 2001, so maybe its just time for it to die soon... I forgot to mention that every once in a while my old hard drive that the sytem files are on fails to load at start up. It will say could not detect system disk in the start up dos screen. If I wait a few hours and start it up again it starts up fine although a little slower then it used to. I am sure its a mobo issue, because I have tried everything I can think of.. I can run DVD Shrink straight from the disk and cut out features that way(still images, cut audio, etc..) Although it took starwars 3 3 hours to encode it that way. It used to take 20-30 minutes...

Anyway, I will try to uninstall the drivers of the dvd burners and the ide channels.

The reformatting of the HDD isn't to get rid of fragmented disk files, but to remove any rogue drivers/viruses/spyware/corrupted OS code that may be causing problems.

Let us know how resetting the IDE channels and uninstalling the burners goes.

it's not a harddrive or burner issue.

I say it's not a burner issue because you're trying to shrink it before you burn it, so your burner isn't even being used yet.

it's not a harddrive issue, because the exact same thing is happening to me.

i've tried backing the file up to 3 different HDDs, and i've tried putting the source file on 3 different HDDs.

it's not a memory or disk space thing either, because I have 2gigs of mem and half a TB of storage space.

it's getting really frustrating because I can't find any conceivable reason why shrink would be give me this "Out of memory. Not enough storage is available to process this command" error.

and also, save for this line, i've started every line with the letter "i" *thumbs down*

if anyone could lend a helping hand, that would be much appreciated.

same problem huh? Does it quit at about 18-40% complete of encoding?
Do you get very slow read rates?

yeah. it always quits between 20-40%

as far as my read rates, i'm not reading it from the dvd. it's only when i try to shrink an existing .iso file.

But when you rip the vts or image to your HD is it very slow for the read rate?

hey!

i (fixed?) the problem.

here's a run-down of how I solved it:

1) I copied the DVD to an .iso file with DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD running in the background.

2) (this is where I ususally just tried to run DVDShrink and got the error)I mounted the .iso file to a virtual drive with Daemon Tools.

3) opened and re-ran AnyDVD in the background

4) opened the .iso as a dvd (from the virtual drive) in DVDshrink and shrank the dvd.

5) burned it

and it worked beautifully.

I'm not sure why it works this way as opposed to just running AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter, then dvdshrink - but hey... whatever. haha.

post back and let me know if this worked for you or not.

take care

Well I tried reinstalling the Ide drives and my computer would boot at all. It kept repeating the start up with no windows mode. I uninstalled all the dvd rives and all the ide drives (including the system drive) the only way I could get it back is to restore windows to the last time it worked basically undoing the unstall of the drivers. I did try what the above said and it worked!! but I still have a read rate of .02

I guess it will take me that long to back up a dvd from now on unless I figure this out. Anyway thanks for the info above man!! I havn't found the firmware update for my pioneer dvd 108 yet. But I will try again this weekend. I am going out to get drunk and forget about pc's=)

Did you uninstall the IDE Primary and Secondary Channels or did you uninstall the IDE controller itself. It seems like the latter. Something is grossly wrong with the speeds you are reporting. They are way too slow.

More ideas.

If you have two burners in your system, uncable one of them. I assume both are on the same IDE channel, so uncable the "slave" if you have a master/slave configuration or the one connected to the middle connector if you have cable select. See what happens with only one of the drives installed. If that doesn't change anything, recable the drive and uncable the other drive and try that. If you have a spare IDE cable, replace the existing one.

See if there is a driver update for your IDE controller. If the IDE controller is integrated on the motherboard, either the motherboard manufacturer's or the computer system manufacturer's support site would have the updated driver if one exists.

If no relief is forthcoming, backup your data, reformat the HDD your OS is installed upon, reinstall the OS and your applications.

If that doesn't work, try to find/borrow a PCI-based IDE controller and install that. Connect your drives to that and see if that solves the problem.

Hi there I had the same problem as yourself and I was given the fix by a senior member. When starting to copy with DVD Shrink, edit the movie by starting on a frame that has a picture (in other words advance the frames out of the blackness at the beginning) dont ask why but it seems to work ok. hope this helps

best regards MMack

@Mmack

Hi.

The second post in this thread had that suggestion. It's a good one, but I'm guessing they already tried it.

For some reason I can get dvd dhrink to work now. Ladyboy, I tried using DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD and then shrink and it work. It must be dvdfab causing the problems, but dvdclone gave dvdshrink the same error. I haven't tried using VOB in between DVD Decrypter and shrink yet. It is still very slow though. about 2 hours and .01 to .05 read rates. I will try what you said later today ladyboy thanks.

Make sure your DVD Decrypter settings are as follows for use with AnyDVD:

To use DVD Decrypter in conjunction with AnyDVD as stated by Olli:
- Proceed to the DVD Decrypter Opening Page - Tools - Settings
- I/O Tab - Click on "Elby CDIO-Elaborate Bytes"
- General Tab - un-check "Check For Structure Protection"

DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD and then into Shrink should work every time for the most part. This same thing is happening with different disks, correct?

yes, I have tried over 3 different media types. Ritek, memorex, tayio yuden, some other off brands...
I followed that guide you gave me to uninstall the ide channels. I uninstalled the secondary and then the primary. Then I restarted my pc and it couldn't load windows until I booted up in "The last known config that worked". So I am assuming it went back to before I tried to reinstall the drivers, undoing what I was trying to do. Is this normal?

I have a soyo firedragon mobo. http://www.soyousa.com/downloads/filedesc.php?id=1942

I was going to get this mobo bios upgrade but this web page freaked me out before. I never had to upgrade my bios before so I don't know if it would help....
