Never had this happen and it is now doing it on both of my computers. I insert a disc, click "open disc" and DVD Shrink does it thing as normal and pulls up all the info . Then when I click "back-up" the hour glass appears for my cursor for a couple of seconds and DVD Shrink just shuts down and closes. Does this on both my home computer running XP and my laptop running XP pro. Any help you can give me will be appreciated.
BEst,
Chris

Hi cconklin1
Welcome to aD
Could be that Shrink can't handle the copy protection. This is one thing it will do if it can't.
What movie are you backing up?

Some suggestions to use:
DVDFab Decrypter/Vobblanker (free)
guide & links to dl

RipIt4Me (free)
guide & links to dl

Not free but had a 21 day free trial - AnyDVD. Just runs in the background w/ Shrink and removes the copy protection.

I FOUND OUT THAT IF THE SHRINK CLOSE ON BACK UP GO THE REAUTHOR ON THE SHRINK AND YOU CAN BACK IT FROM THAT.

The problem happens on ANY DVD I try to back up. I do have AnyDVD installed as well. I also uninstalled it and still have the same problem. I swear it has something to do with the upfates I have been receiving from Microsoft. I have been using DVDshrink for YEARS and never had a problem. Any other ideas?
Oh, I also tried pulling over just the movie and doing "reauthor", same thing happens...

Could be a conflict w/ an update and Shrink but happening on 2 different pc's is strange.
Did you install any other burning software on each since this started happening? Anything change on both?
I have the latest ms updates on no problems but I don't use Shrink as much as I use to.

Do you have Nero installed?

I'm having the same problem. I have been using DVD Fab decrypter, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. I have made over 150 successful backups, using these programs without a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@cconklin1
It's sounds like a conflict somewhere it's just finding the conflict that may be the problem. Don't think AnyDVD is it.
The developer that made Shrink also did Nero's Recode - may want to try that. It won't handle copy protected movies but w/ AnyDVD running it will.
Both programs are very similar. Recode though is a little faster and does a better job in the quality/compression department.

Another option may be to use decrypter to burn instead of Nero. In shrink go to edit>preferences> File i/o tab. Uncheck 'enable burning w/ Nero'. This may get you past the crashing when clicking 'backup'. If it does then under 'select backup target' pick 'iso & burn w/ decrypter'.

@jt165
Is it all dvd's or just the newer ones? Have you tried running them thru VobBlanker 1st after dvdfab then opening those files in Shrink?

binkie7,

This is something that is happening with newer DVDs(United 93, Rumor has it). I'll try an older DVD and see if the same problem occurs. I'll try using VobBlanker as well.

Thanks

Hi jt165
Yep these 2 can give shrink a problem. They have the newer copy protection(s) on them.
Running the files thru VobBlanker first than opening those files in Shrink should do the trick. The guide in is a post above if you need it.
Keep us posted.

I dont speak English very well but I had the same problem try to make the backup to Hard disk folder and then burn with Nero, if this it work ,desinstall and reinstall Nero again and try to make a backup directly to your dvd recorder.
I hope that this can help you.
