Hello, I've just got a new computer with dvd burner.... have been reading the forums for hours trying to figure out best and easiest way to burn/copy dvd's! I see some law has come in an ruined all the fun... whats the best way for me to burns dvd's? I'm pretty ok at installing and operating new programs (but not computer whizz). If its too much to type, the linkd would be great. Thanks - from NZ!!

If you are going to copy your own DVD's, here are a couple of free programs. DVDFabDecrypter to download your DVD to your harddrive and decrypt it and DVDShrink to reduce your information to a single layer DVD. You can find both these programs in my signature, DVDIdle and dvdshrink. DVDFabDecrypter is updated and has latest decryption. Good Luck and Happy burning.

Thank you so much for the fast advice!! I've downloaded DVDFabDecrypter and will try it out soon. Just another question.... does this alter the original dvd in anyway? ie, is it obvious that the original dvd has been copied? :o)

If you have Nero you can set it up in DVDShrink to automatically write for you. I knew nothing about burning before Feb. and it was so easy to learn. I used these forums when I had problems. I found lots of great advice.:)

yeah, advice needed! I've used DVDFabDecrypter to copy a dvd onto my hard drive. Now do I use my Roxio progam to burn it or do I need another program? I've read somewhere the Roxio aint that flash.... What on earth is dvdshrink??? Arrggghhh, sorry to be a pain in the a*s :o))

Download DVDShrink so that you can compress the DVD information to fit on one single DVD. I usually don't keep the extras so I get rid of them in DVDShrink. Once the info is on your hdd you click on DVDShrink, then hit open files it should take you to video it will download it for you, go to reauthor and pickwhat you want, I pick main movie, then hit backup and it will do it for you . First look at all the settings set burn speed for 1/2 of rated speed. Read all info . Good Luck...

Hi again. I've got as far as hitting 'back-up' (on dvdshrink) but I don't have Nero. Is that a problem, can I use the program that came with my computer? do you save to harddrive first then burn or do you burn straight to dvd?

save to your hard drive with shrink. You don't have to have Nero. Then, there are some very good programs to do the actual burning. I prefer CloneDVD, or 1click dvd copy. CloneDVD is not a free program, but regarded as the best. If you plan on doing alot of backing up,you might look at getting AnyDVD , again not a free program, but it removes all copyright protections known... with continuous free updates. If you decide to get AnyDVD and clone dvd, there is a discounted package price for buying both Well worth the money. There is a 30 free trial with both CloneDVD and AnyDVD so you can see if you like them.

You could buy both of those or just buy Nero and get rid of Roxio. If you go to prefferences in DVDShrink edit than go to I/O you can click on Nero to automatially start. So you just click backup and sit back until it is finished. Time it takes is relative to amount of compression used, the more compression the longer it takes.

Thanks for the links... this whole process has become harder than I thought! I did the DVD Shrink twice, but god knows where it is on my computer... said it was saving to hard drive disk? Nevermind, I will try the ImgBurn. Ta

Have you had a successful burn yet? It looks like yor best bet is with Imgburn. I see you were going to download that. I have never used Imgburn but from what I've seen it looks like it works in sync with DVDShrink. Anyway Good Luck:)

Hi Mandy76! I forgot to tell you when you set up DVDShrink go to settings and for size of blank media, set it on custom and then type in 4300 for size, that way you don't come to close to the edge when you burn.

According to my experiences, I've never encountered any playback issues with 4460MB via DVD Shrink. However, I must say that I only use genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (Made In Japan by Hitachi Corp.). I've been burning over hundreds and hundreds (thousand) with 4460MB and so far they all worked flawlessly.
Yes, it is true that to be on the safe side, you may custom your size to 4300MB - 4360MB via DVD Shrink if you're using other inferior media (3rd class or crap media), but with top notch media like TY, Verbs. and Maxell (MIJ), you shouldn't have/need to worry about it.
