modchip + hdd + bad laser

I have a V4 PS2 with a bad laser. Am I going to be able to install a modchip, and a hdd, and be able to boot games/homebrew off the hdd without having a working dvd laser?

I'm thinking this could be accomplished by loading the hard drive with the necessary software beforehand.


Is there any other way to revive my old PS2 without replacing the laser??

and they suggested using a chip with a built in hdm.

I just got a crystal chip 2.0, and i think it can be flashed with software utilities/hdm.

You can hook up the hard drive to your PC and transfer the game images with WinHIIP. Depening on which mod-chip you choose (maybe they all do this) but if yours supports it, you can have it boot to an elf file (like HD Advance or HD Loader) from your memory card.

The only question is how to get the files onto your Memory card. You can try to FTP the files to your memory card, but that might not work correctly. It didn't work for me and I needed to have an image burned onto a CD which I booted the PS2 with and it loaded the correct files. If your laser doesn't work then that won't work for you.

But search around on this site for info on how to FTP a HD Loader or HD Advance to your memory card. If you can get that far, then the rest will be easy enough.

ok well, i put a crystal chip in my v12 slimline. I used the independence exploit on my friends V4. So now i'm tryin to get my PS2 with the busted laser to boot from a MC, USB or HDD. dont think its happening without some kind of chip or mod
