I have lately been playing with one of my PSP's. I broke the Analog Joystick and needed to replace it. I, in my curious way, decided to part it out (took the whole thing apart) and looky looky. The UMD drive is easy enough to take out and replace. Even without the technical knowledge I believe that you would be able to replace it yourself. The first time I took it apart and reassembled I had left debris in the screen and needed to reopen and blow the screen clean. If you do decided to do it yourself I reconmend Compressed Air, Jewelers tools (small screwdrivers) and an area where you'll be able to find the small things you will drop (It does happen). For me I used a serving tray with a white base and an half inch high border so my screws did not fall onto the floor. All went well and I am confident now that anything that needs to be replaced, can.

Good Luck

When you opened it did it stay together or do lots of belts and stuff come out, im just scared of opening my psp.

Edit: Also if my psp isnt reading the discs dose that mean i have to replace the laser or is their something else i have to replace?

i found it easyer to take out the screen and the meatal thing where you place it that way you wont have to worry about messing it up and oh yeah its kinda tricky to take the umd door out so take your time no mater how frustrateing might save you from haveing to buy a new door and also those 4 screws that hold the umd can break off easy so be carefull with that 2 u might even wanna take out the mother board for this 2

So i should take the screen off put it to one side and then take the umd door off.(I'll use guides)Then should i try moving the laser around abit first to see if it got stuck on the drive gear then put it back together to see if it works?

yeah just take the screen out very easy to do then you wanna take the umd door out that way you can see what your doing better and after the door is out you can just pull the part where the game is held/the part where the umd door was atached and pull it back and it will pop out but dont worry you will find that you can easy lee put it back in place since its detachable

like i said replaceing the umd door is kinda tricky like the guide states so be patient thier and also the 4 screws holding the umd drive can break easy so be carefull with that 2

my advice just unplug every thing from the motherboard and take it out that way you wont have to worry about it
