Will it diplay a message explaining that it is hard locked? When I first tried a different sim in my phone I tried several passwords (it had been my mother's phone before me)

A hardlocked phone will not accept a different simcard. It will function with the simcards from the service provider it is locked to.

Remove sim first,power on the phone.
After the phone boots up, press #
Press * 3 times fast for (p)
Press * 4 times fast for (w)
Press * 2 times fast for (+)
Verify code before pressing the last #.
