Sorry about this but I seem to have a unique delemna. I need to know which of the programs I should use to download a DVD to my computer so I can then use it to burn DVD's from my hard drive. What seems to make me unique is that I am not interested in burning encripted movies but rather DVD's that are not protected and are approved for me to download and replicate.

I currently use Nero To burn my DVD's by using Nero Startsmart to copy a disc and then I copy that copy to another DVD. But from what I understand It is better to download the DVD to my hard drive then to keep burning from other DVD's. Kind of like taking a zerox copy of something again and again....it may go bad over time.

So how do I get the DVD material to my hard drive and then use it burn DVD's with. I could use DVD Shrink but do I need that one or another one. WHich one should I use or does Nero do what I need?

I have Nero 6.6.0.18 which has been working very well for me. I have an NEC 3520A and have had good luck with it since I have been using 66018 version of Nero. If Nero could put this on my hard drive it would be great....but I keep on reading all this forum posts and everyone is trying to do it with other types of programs. Maybe I am missing something. But I really would like to put the DVD material on my hard drive. Thanks in advance for this really newbie question.

As for newbies, I'll say go with either DVDFAB Decrypter (one of the best FREE ripper) or RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS, another flawless method). Since you have Nero 6.6.0.18 already, I'm guessing you should have got Nero Recode 2 too. To make a long story short:

((((( method 1 )))))
* have DVDFAB Decrypter rip the movie (any new released) to hard drive
* EXTRA step: process or clean out craps with VobBlanker
* have Nero Recode or DVD Shrink transcode or compress the movie
* have Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express to burn your final VIDEO_TS file

((((( method 2 )))))
* have RipIt4Me to rip the movie into hard drive
* EXTRA step: process or clean out craps with FixVTS
* have Nero Recode or DVD Shrink to transcoded or compress the movie
* have ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter to burn the final ISO Image

((((( NOTE: Extra step )))))
If for some reason DVD Shrink or Nero Recode is having troubles, then you'll need to process the already ripped VIDEO_TS.IFO or VIDEO_TS file through either VobBlanker or FixVTS to filter out corrupted or invalid cells. Once it's done processing, just continue on with either DVD Shrink or Nero Recode.

thanks for your advise...but I realize that I did not clarify my problem very well.....Here is why my request is unusual. I do not need to use dycription technology because I am not trying to copy a movie but rather material that is not copyrighted. So my request is unusual from most.....and hopefully my request will be easier to handle......I am looking for realiability as well as ease of use.

THe advise you gave seems great but is there a way to simplify it greatly since I am not copying DVD's that require dycription. My main question is how do I get the DVD material to my hard drive and then use it burn DVD's with. So I am looking for something that is very easy to use and very realiable. WHich one should I use or does Nero do what I need?

also the last step in your process where you state....have Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express to burn your final VIDEO_TS file....What does that Mean? Does that mean that this video Ts file is the last step to save my file that i use to burn DVD's with? Or is it the actual burn file where i have already burned a file with? Again I apologize for my ignorance here.....but I am unfortunately a newbie....

There is no problem with making a copy of a copy. Digital copies are not like Xerox copies.

If you want to store a DVD on your HD you could create an image with Nero. Open Nero Express and from the drop down on the right choose "Image Recorder [DVD]" You would then press "Copy Entire Disc" and proceed. The source will be your DVD in whatever drive you have. You will end up with a Nero image, it will have an .nrg extension. If you want to burn it start Nero Express again, choose your burner from the drop down (the [DVD] one) and choose "Disc Image or saved Project.

If all you want to do is backup or burn any unencrypted files (ISO or VIDEO_TS), then all you need is either Nero Burning Rom or Nero Exress (for VIDEO_TS file) and DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn (for ISO Image file).

To make a long story short, if your unencrypted file is VIDEO_TS:
** simply use Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express to "make a copy" into your hard drive.
** once it's done, just burn it with either Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom.

If your unencrypted file is an ISO Image:
** simply use DVD Decrypter to read to your hard drive.
** once it's done, have DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn burn the ISO.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help....for the most part what you said works great...but about half my DVD's are having problems copiing...they will not even allow themselves to be copied to my hard drive. The other half work fine....makes me think that maybe some of my DVD's are corrupted....here is a sample of the output....what is confussing to me is why i have been able to copy about 5 DVDs and about 5 different DVD's have failed...so this is confusing....any help I would very much appreciate it...

A few things. It appears you tried to copy on the fly (DVD-Copy on the fly), kinda iffy. You also seem to have an Nvidia chipset, also kinda iffy, and last the log shows DMA as being off (at least to Nero), this may have something to do with the Nvidia chipset.

You might want to try DVDDecypter and see if it can read your discs. The easiest way would be to set Mode to ISO-> Read and see what happens. I think it defaults to 20 re-tries if it has problems reading. This can be increased.

thanks for your help...what does on the fly mean and how can i change it? Dma off? Ok your forum has lots on that...but is this a problem with my chipset nivdia video card? I can try DVD Decrypter but i do not need to worry about that since my DVD's are not encrypted....and why does it work regularly with some of my DVD's and not with others.....

I checked on your link for DMA and found out that my computer does not have primary and secondary underneath the IDE/ATA/ATAPI Parrallel ATA COntroller line ....instead it has NVIDiA n force 3 250 Parallel ATA Controller and underneath it has NVIDiA n force 3 250 Serial ATA Controller .....so my computer does not match your example at all....what is up with that? I can not go on from here unless I figure out why my computer does not have the primary and secondary lines that your example has.....am I making sense here...? Stopped cold by this.....
by the way in the window that comes up it says let bios select transfer mode under both the primary and secondarty sections ...but this window is not covered at all in your examples..............this does not seem correct.........at least according to your example for DMA.....

Try DVDDecrypter, it will convert to ISO as it tries to read. It also works well for burning an ISO (any image actually) to disc (ISO-> Write). It will also help to see if maybe it's a Nero problem. For some reason there appears to be some sort of anomaly with the nforce chipset and Nero. Your DMA settings are probably(?) fine. Your chipset shows differently in Device Manager than the standard 2 channel IDE ones.

Try the DVDDecrypter approach first.

You might also try this app and check your HD and opticals to see if it lists DMA as on.

I just found something that might be relevant.....at this link...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/323802

it seems as if he had the same problem as me.....and finally was able to solve it by finding Nvidia drivers on Add and Remove programs...and then only removing the IDE drivers...unfortunately I can not find the Nvidia driver on my add and remove programs....so wwhat do I do. I remember a year ago I had a similar problem and tried this and it worked....maybe if i removed the driver on the Window it would then find the new drivers and put it back in my add and remove programs....but can you help me find the IDE drivers? I will try what you suggested as well but this might work..... HEre is what the guy said who was finally able to get this problem solved....

Solved

I have now found a solution.

What the forum was saying about the log files showing DMA as turned off kept me thinking.

I tried the sugestion from the link to have the system reinstall the drivers but this kept returning to the same problem.

In the end what I needed to do was go to Add/Remove programs.

Go to Nvidia drivers.

Told it to only uninstall the Nvidia IDE drivers.

The system then restarted and found the Microsoft Drivers.

These have installed. The Nero log file now shows DMA as active and the system is now burning without any problems.

Question is. Will Nvidia or MSI give me spindle of CD-R's to replace the ones coastered due to the software they provided with the motherboard!!!

Many thanks for the input provided.

I tried uninstalling the drivers from the pop up that comes when I click on the IDE/ATA line.....and that did not work just as the guy noted in the link above....there must be a way where I can uninstall the IDE drivers alone to make this work.....how can I access the IDE drivers since they are not on my add and remove programs section. IS this making some sense..?

Take the DVD you want on your HD and pop it your drive. Open DVDDecrypter and go to Mode-> ISO-> Read R. In 'Source' make sure the optical with your DVD is listed, then click on the arrow. It will tell you where it will place the ISO it will create and the name under 'Destination'. You can of course change this to wherever you want.

To burn ISO's from your HD (or any image) set Mode-> ISO-> Write W. Pop in a blank and point it to your ISO. You can also use it for burning CD images also.

the window that you are using as an example is completely foreign to me and is not on my computer that I can find... My DVD decriptor window says,"ANYDVD" at the top and does not say DVD Decriptor at the top as is printed in the example that you have and is put out by SlySoft...so I went to where the programs are on my computer and was able to find under slysoft a section that says DVD ripper....I have been able to download something to my harddrive using this but i have not been able to access it nor use it in any way....so as of now this program has been of no use to me. Why does the top of your example different from mine?

The link I posted on my very first reply is for DVDFAB Decrypter, not DVD Decrypter. DVDFAB and DVD Decrypter are two totally different engines. DVDFAB Decrypter is just a ripper, most likely to rip in VIDEO_TS file. Whereas DVD Decrypter is both ripper for File Mode (VIDEO_TS) and ISO Mode (for ISO image), it is also a burning engine (for ISO image).

To be honest with you, I don't know why it's hard for you to rip and backup any "unencrypted" dvds or movies as you've originally stated.

Again, below is what I said after discovered that your movies or dvds is "unencrypted":
Quote:
To make a long story short, if your unencrypted file is VIDEO_TS:
** simply use Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express to "make a copy" into your hard drive.
** once it's done, just burn it with either Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom.

If your unencrypted file is an ISO Image:
** simply use DVD Decrypter to read to your hard drive.
** once it's done, have DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn burn the ISO.

Good luck.
I can clearly see 3 things that may be the culprit and why your Nero is failing to burn.

(1) your burner doesn't like the media you're using
(2) you're burning on the fly (this is a no no)
(3) you have Nvidia driver aka ('Drivers\nvatabus.sys'), this seems to conflicts with Nero all the times

Good luck.

thanks Alcohol...i guess it is better to be addicted to Afterdawn than alcohol? But regardless I am sorry for my confusion about dvd decryptor but most of your links for Decryptor go to sly soft when I click on them. So it is easy to see why I got confused...but your explanation about making an image makes sense. I am also confused why this is not working as well as could be. But tomorrow I will have time to download the decryptor and get rid of slysoft decryptor before using it.

Did you have a chance to check out this link about DMA Problems?
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/323802

I found this link last year on this forum and was able to solve my problem last year but unfortunately there is no longer a way for me to only uninstall the Nvidia IDE drivers. There is another way to uninstall the IDE drivers but I am not sure how to do this....but I will first try to do this with the real DVD decryptor...But I am certain if I could do this then most of my problems would be solved. Again I can do this with some of my discs ( I think it is the minus discs....I think the plus ones I am having some problems with...at least that is my theory) I do appreciate very much your patience with me.

Also One other THING how do I get rid of on the FLY? And where DO I find out where I can find out what that means....any links?
