I have been searching many posts to see if people are happy with Flip Top Covers for the PS2.
Now i've noticed on a lot of these posts, there is no mention of Swap Magic.
So am I to assume you can play back-ups with JUST the Flip Top Cover? Or do you need the Swap Magic discs?
I look after my nephew on saturdays and he's trashed 3 very expensive and favoured games so far. It would be nice to give him a nice, cheap DVD-R to play from instead of a prized original from my collection.
Any help would be great thanks.
It would be great to have a reply within 24 hours as I'm going to be purchasing one tomorrow and would like to know if I can just buy the Flip Top Cover.
Thanks in advance.

You need swap magic. I have a flip top mod and it's so much better than the slide card/cog swap method. Flip top's the best way to go if you're going to use swap magic.

Thanks for the quick response mate.
Appreciate it.
Okay, another question sorry lol!
There are two discs that come with the Swap Magic yeah?
A CD and a DVD disc.
Can the CD one be used to play PSone games?
And can the PS2 still play DVDs?
My last PS2 (Now in the rubbish dump) was mod-chipped all I could play were PS2 games. No PSone games, no CDr-based PS2 games and no DVDs.
Thanks again

The DVD disc is used to boot DVD PS2 games
The CD disc is used to boot CD PS2 games
The CD disc does NOT boot PSOne games (although, there are ways of getting around it)
Yes, your system will still play DVD's. Fliptop mod doesn't do anything to the hardware. It's nothing but a case modification that allows easy access to the disc.
Also, if you want a quality modchip, get a DMS4 Pro SE or Matrix Infinity chip. They let you do everything you were able to do before the modification and much, much more. They even make your DVD player region free.

Thanks again.
I don't think I'll be having another Mod-Chip. Not after what happened to my last PS2. lol
So I guess PSone back-ups are out then?
Nevermind, my nephew will just be warned to stay away from them lol.
One final question.
Can you play DVD-9 back-ups such as God of War with Swap Magic?

DVD9 DVD-R's will never work on Swap Magic. However, if you want to back up God of War, you can rebuild it so that it fits onto a DVD5. Just read the God of War backup faq at the top of these forums... well at least it used to be at the top. Just do a search for it.

I was going to ask why they can't play DVD-9 back-ups. But I'm just being greedy now lol
Thanks again for all your help mate, you're a star.
Will definately be buying a Flip Top Cover and Swap Magic tomorrow.

I believe the TOC size for DVD9 is way too big for Swap Magic to handle, so it won't boot. Some people try to do a TOC refresh, but I doubt it'll work. And besides, DVD9's are expensive.

Yeah i'll second that.
Here in the UK, it works out 33p ($0.62) for a single printable Taiyo Yuden DVD-R and £1.60 ($3) for a single printable Taiyo Yuden DVD-9.
Do the Multi-player games still work with online play with the Swap Magic? (Definately last question, I'm going to bed then lol)
Thanks in advance!

Multiplayer games work fine with Swap Magic as long as you patch the DNAS images before you burn the game.

patching is simple.download windip (not WinZIP).the newest one(1.7 or sumtin) .select image, click scan file, click verify version, then checked out the dnas codes on afterdawn.where the x's are type in your own letters and numbers but type the rest as stated on the site.when you done typing in the code click patch and voila.there you go.

yeh, a lot of ppl have probs with flip tops. it probably caught the clip or sumthing. by the way creddly, some modchips are actually better than swapmagic. the matrix infnity chip boots ALL PS1 AND PS2 GAMES, DVDS, CD'S And all the others. AND because it has an ACTEL Based IC chip, it never burns out, or send any signals to ur ps2 causing to mess it up. and your nephew will probably scratch the swapmagic disks. the 2 best chips in the world are 1. Matrix Infinity and 2.Crystal something - i 4got the name!

Well, the DMS4 Pro SE would be one of the two best chips in the world along with Matrix Infinity right now. Crystal's relatively new, so I can't really say it's one of the best yet. They do, however, have a feature that lets you play online without having to patch the DNAS image though. That's a pretty cool feature.
