I've been trying to get my slim ps2 to run backups, but I'm pretty unsure on where to start or even if i'm looking in the right place. Here's what i've done:

1) Backed up several games to DVD using alcohol.
2) I'm pretty good with hardware, so i've modded my slim ps2 according to this tutorial: http://www.ps2nfo.com/pstwo.html
3) It seems to work, and i can tell that the sensors are disabled, because the disc still spins when i open the flip-top.
4) I bought a copy of GameShark 2 and am trying to boot using it.
5) When i select "start game" it reads thee disc at first but then it just drops back to the main menu. Here's where i'm stuck.

So my main questions are: is there a specific version of gameshark i need to use, or is the slim ps2 just unable to boot backups without anything but swap magic? I couldn't find any info on this even though i searched for a while. What exactly is the function of the toggle switch in that tutorial? Thanks for the help. I'm new to this.

Gameshark isn't going to work. You need swap magic. Older versions of gameshark used to used to work on older PS2s. That's was like 3 years ago and I think it only booted CD backups.

I don't have Gameshark but I did the same mod as you and got backups to boot using ARMAX Evo and CDLoader. Pretty simple but can be a pain in the rump.

As for the toggle switch in the tutorial it is used to disable the lid sensor for the fliptop. Basically it keeps you from having to use the eject button which the PS2 will recognize.

I made this guide to hopefully help you out. It was made with help from Ace_2 and jjax tutorials that helped me get started. So all original credit goes to those two and the others that helped me out.

What is needed to play backup games on PS2 Slim v14 SCPH-70001 using the ARMAX EVO and Cogswap.

ARMAX Evo
High TOC PS2 Original Game (I used Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal)
CD Loader Boot Disc
PS2 Exploit Disc
Magic Keys (or any other method to work eject tray) I used this tutorial: http://www.ps2nfo.com/pstwo.html
Alternate: Tape and Tissue Mod - Ace_2's method: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/337567

Here are the links for the CD Loader and PS2 Exploit Disc that I made that works with my PS2 Slim v14 SCPH-70001.

CD Loader Boot Disc (I burnt with Nero)

http://rapidshare.com/files/2581244/CDLOADER_Boot_Disc.rar.html

PS2 Exploit Disc (Burn with Alcohol 120%)

http://rapidshare.com/files/2581505/PS2_Exploit_Disc.rar.html

How to burn PS2 Exploit Disc with Alcohol 120%:

When the image file is made, put in one of your blank CD-Rs and start Alcohol 120%. Click "Image Burning Wizard". Locate your CD image, click it, then click "Next". You will now be at a window called: Prepare your CD/DVD recorder. Set the write speed to 4X, datatype to PlayStation 2, check "Rectify Sub-Channel Data", then click "Start".

Instructions

HOW TO PLAY BACKUP WITH ARMAX AND EXPLOIT DISC

I used this method without Pendrive in the USB slot.

1. Put ARMAX EVO in PS2. Turn on PS2.

2. Start ?Media Player? with ?X?.

3. Once ?Media Player? is loaded remove whatever is on lid sensorand put ?CD LOADER? disc in, put object back on sensor (in my case switch toggle switch). ?CDLOADER.elf? should be displayed on top right of screen. Highlight CDLOADER.ELF and press ?X? to play.

4. When CD LOADER is loaded, press "Δ" to retract laser.

5. Once disc stops spinning, put ARMAX disc in. Press "Δ" again.

6. Once disc stops spinning, swap for "PS2 Exploit Disc? and hit "X".Screen should be red with pink underneath flashing yellow.

7. Remove whatever is on lid sensor (in my case switch toggle switch).

8. Put in Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal original DVD.

9. Place whatever is on lid sensor back on sensor (in my case switch toggle switch).

10. You should now see the Launch Elf?s main menu. You should see Cogswap with button you chose. I chose "[]" (Square) as my button. This is what I decided to use as my button when I made the PS2 Exploit Disc. (If you want another button to use then a new disc will have to be made with PS2_Exploit_Utility_5.0_Public_Beta which can be downloaded from here: http://console.iscentral.net/downloadnow.php?file=251

12. Hit "X". Keep eye on screen until you see Yellow PS2 DVD-ROM.

13. Press "X". Disc will spin again. When disc stops screen should See PURPLE DVD.

14. Put in BACKUP DISC and hit "X".

15. BACKUP SHOULD LOAD.

I hope this helps you out.

If you have any problems let me know and I will try to help you out with it.
