I've had pretty good success backing up movies using these cheap office depot DVD+R blank disks. Now I buy Memorex DVD+R 16x, and using them I am unsuccessful in backing up my movie. So I throw in one of my left over office depot disks, and I am able to backup the movie just fine. I just tried TDK DVD+R 16x disks, and they're not working as well.

I have a NEC DVD RW ND-3550A drive, purchased about 9 months ago. I just updated my firmware to 1.06, and problem still exists. Best I can tell it should be able to handle the 16x disks.

I am using DVD Shrink, DVD43, and sometimes PCedit.

So am I using the wrong disks, and have to stick to 8x speed?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi I think you'll find your problem is the memosux media, If you go down to the DVD media thread and read through such as the Official Taiyo Yuden thread you'll find that the memosux isn't rated very high the OD discs are excellent quality compared to the memosux with the general consensus of ty, verbatim being used the most. Also there's a list of media codes on what the manufacturer of the discs are with a link to DVD identifier to see what you've actually got. Chris

Yeah, agreed with ChrisC586,your problem's due to memorex media. You can try any program or updating your firmware, all these will be in vain. You got your own answer by saying that you never got this kind of problem using office depot medias, but only when you try memorex.Another bad thing on memorex is that sometimes even if you have been able to burn something on that media, then afterwards you want to use it to make another copy,it will just fail, impossible to rip from that memorex media. It happened to me several times when my friend(who uses memorex)asks me to rip and burn another copy from these memorex discs which himself got failed with.Memorex has quite a reputation here in AD.With a little research and reading in AD,it's amazing to see how much new things you can discover and learn here.

It's important to find media your burner likes and stick with it. One size does not fit all. Also a Brand name does not really tell you who actually makes the disc.

ID the ones that work and stick with them.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Verbatim discs (MCC code) seem to work well with all burners and are easy to find.

here's your DVD writer and you can now look what others say about what disks your drive likes.

Here is a media guide..... it's just that, something to compare disks: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Just buy the good stuff: Made in Japan(read the lable on the disk and make sure it's MIJ). You can't go wrong with that..... Verbaitm is the only exception to the MIJ rule.... they are top notch disks and made in Taiwan/Singapore. Using good media stops many problems!

I use Taiyo Yuden 99% of the time..... haven't had a coaster due to poor media in almost a year since I started using TYs..... I also use Verbatim! Now I have 100% success rate!

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll try some of the recommended media, hopefully that solves the problem.

I'm still a little concerned tho, everyone focused on the memorex, but no one seemed to notice that I also had zero success with TDK. Since this post I ID'd them and they are TDK003, also highly rated.

But I will go ahead and spend some more cash and try the Verbatim.
And thanks again, I am rookie as hell at this so really appreciate it.

The one thing both of these disks have in common, they use various manufacturers to make their products, some good, some bad, often times it is a crap shoot. Lately however, the majority of these two offerings Memosux and TDK are from a company called CMC MAG corporation, something akin to Satan or the Bubonic plague as far as DVD disks go. The best advice has already been given, stick with good known manufacturers and you'll get good results, stray to other disks and who knows what you'll get, read these two threads for a lot of useful information regarding who makes what and who you should avoid at all costs.

Here's some burn tests from CDFreaks with +R CMC's burned in an LG H10A.

And the comment:

>>>This is an excellent burn. CMC MAG M01 is highly recommended for this drive. The transfer curve is perfect.

And for you testing freaks:

PI-8 errors Average/Sec: 2.00
PI-1 failures (PIF) Avg/Sec:0.07

As I've said, one size does not fit all. Find media your burner likes and stick with it.

here is your burner:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?...0&Search=Search

if you scroll down to the TDK media you will notice that it has mixed results on poor/good! But still the only bad thing about the media guide in DigitalFAQ is that they show TDK to be first class media..... it's been my experience that being made in Taiwan isn't being made in Japan! The media guide is just that..... but it's not fool proof. I'll stick to the Made In Japan rule and the only exception to that is Verbatim! Notice I said ONLY EXCEPTION and did not include TDK! that's just IMO... and my 2 cents. for what it's worth!

I hope everyone realizes that Verbatim does not have a Taiwan facility. Taiwan Verbs are made by CMC and Prodisc. CMC is also the largest institutional shareholder of Prodisc.

@IHoe

The Verbs from Taiwan may have the MCC code, but they are manufactured by CMC. Even your link mentions "outsourcing".

MysticE,

Ok verbatim's are manufactured by CMC but they use MCC specs and materials (dye). Cadillac's and vega's are both manufactured by GMC. Does this make them equil? MCC stamped discs (verbatim) are superior to CMC stamped discs.

The differences between the MCC discs and CMC discs made by CMC are:
1) the stampers--this includes the MID code as well as groove geometry
2) sometimes, but not always, the dye used. There are other suppliers of azo cyanine besides MCC.

All else is the same. The greater factor in the performance difference lies in the stamper, not the dye. Fuji's Oxonol dye is proving to be one of the best in terms of stability over heat and humidity; and if the initial recording is properly tuned, recordings on that dye will last a long time.

MysticE and Joe,

If you two want to use CMC MAG coded discs, go buy em all up. Not many others want them so that leaves plenty for you. I will tell you from experience all the CMC discs I have used although most burn and play fine initially they have playback problems within 6 months to a year. My MCC coded verbatims still play perfect years later. Please buy up all the CMC coded discs off the shelves so there won't be as many burn issues with members here.

I am not here to argue, only to try and steer members in a direction that will most likely provide good results with the least amount of problems and issues possible. Cmc mags may work ok for some drives and setups but the odds are still better with verbatim or taiyo yuden.

Some people drive Porsche, some drive Cadillac, some drive Chevy, and some push Yugos, each person uses whatever they want regardless of what the rest of the population thinks.
