For some reason it seems to not be working anymore, has a trouble reading discs etc. is this a firmware problem or could it be something more sinister?

This drive is the one used for writing disks,so the firmware was not changed,so um it's probably the drive.How old is it? um...You can try blowing it out with a can of compressed air,there might just be dust on the lens..if that doesnt help,then um...i'd just buy a new one,there so cheap right now anyway...

The drive is brand new, that's the troubling part, it doesn't recognise discs at all! Really frustrating...it used to work but for some reason no longer....
