i have 12x 22min files, at 127kbps, roughly 140mb each and 400 x 288 dimensions.
All the files are very high quality video and i need to compress them as to fit them all on one standard DVD-R, VCD format. When i try to brn the files to disc with my: "VSO convertX to DVD" the outcome reaches about 5.47GB. and burning it would result in major frame loss, and sound and video out of sync. I need to cmpress these files so badly. can any1 help please?
im willing to buy new software, but obviously would prefer free compression software. Thanks guys
I'd try compressing the files with Shrink or Nero Recode after CovertX is done with them.
Compressing from 5.47 down to 4.38 shouldn't cause much change in the quality.
Why VCD format?
Other options include splitting and burning to two DVD-5s or using a DL DVD-9 blank. Not gonna work as VCD though.
i've never actually thought of doing that? lol so what would i do? cancel the burn after it has converted them?
VCD format so its playable in my DVD player, i though SVCD would result in a much higher mb burn? am i right? meaning it would burn of an even lower quality.
id prefer not to use 2 DVD's as i am already really settling for second best, as the .avi file collection is actually 24 files, and i thought i could maybe get 12 per disc
I pulled out Videohelp's bitrate calculator
http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm#manually and ran your numbers (just the length x 12) and using 2 DVDs as the target size. Came up with a bitrate of 4391. Max for DVD is 9570 according to the calculator.
AFAIK with bitrate, generally, higher is better for quality. You want to keep the bitrate up as high as possible.
I have a problem with your 127kbps/sec figure...where is that number coming from? You stated these were high quality video. At that bitrate I don't see how they could be.
So.... you want to use a VCD format on these to get them to fit, yet you want high quality.
The problem I see is that using SVCD (which would be noticably crappy) you would have to use 10 CDs for 12 of these video clips. This yields a bitrate of 2556 kbits/sec, which is the maximum bitrate for SVCD. Now if you were to burn SVCD to a DVD, I don't know if this would even play...I doubt your DVD player would recognze this. I've googled around a bit and it does not appear possible.

Acording to my advanced math skills you have 8.8 hours of video. It does not seem unreasonable to me to convert these to DVD format and then split this much up between several DVDs.
The quality really depends on the quality of the source video. Your stated bitrate numbers tell me that these are not very high quality. What exactly are these video clips?
Video clips are personally recorded off of sky television over here in the UK, 'tv ripped' (so there for not piracy! lol)
the stated kbps is upon right clicking on the individual file and selecting properties. yeah i see what your saying about VCD i tried it last night, and now i have a failed burn, well not so 'failed' just really crap.
Also i converted to DVD format yesterday, and managed to fit all 12 videos on to one disc, when i put it into my player, it is indeed viewable although, background occasionally appears 'pixelated' but the audio and video sync is near perfect. i think i will re-consider getting them down to 12videos per disc and opt for your previous suggestion and split them even more, i think 6 per disc should work well. in DVD format though obviosuly.
I ran a google search and i can get 50 dvd-r's for £9 gbp, so i think i am in luck (its a big big collection of videos i need to burn!)

Please upgrade to the latest v2.1.4.162 version.
Make sure you have DVD5 set as your output.
Make sure to disable: [ ] Include original file
Then if you still have issues, provide us a full conversion log.
First, upgrade your VSO as cougar recommends. It is best to have software like this updated.
Why not split all 24 into 3 discs or 8 episodes per disc?
That will yield a bitrate of about 3220 kbps video which is pretty good quality (I am assuming 192 kbps stereo AC3).
I say it is better to use 1 extra disc and have higher quality than to make a coaster by trying to fit a few more episodes per disc. Also, when bitrate drops too low, you can have playback problems with DVD players.
