Hello,

This is long but interesting, see if u can solve it

I've had this problem since December '05 and learnt to live with it, but still want to get to the bottom of it.

Dec '05, i bought a Samsung (TSSTcorp) DVD burner. The first disk i burnt was a DVD+RW to check it up. It wrote onto it well and played smoothly on the DVD player. Thinking the air was clear, i proceeded authoring video onto DVD-R media. It used to write the lead-in and then freeze. Windows would respond, but wouldn't shut down. I used other software inc Windows own burning tool, all with the same prob.

So, i took my drive out to throw it at the vendor's face, but the freak wrote onto a DVD-R disk rite in front of me. So i took it back home, formatted the sys and retried (at least 3 times if i remember rite). Then i bought the cheapest DVD blanks possible (so cheap that they had no title on it and the word DVD+R was printed in small on the centre clear part of the disk). So imagine my surprise when it wrote on really cheap disks and repeatedly wasted good quality -r disks. Sitting with extreme frustration and moments away from ripping the drive out and throwing it out, i noticed the lightly printed DVD+R on the cheap disk. Until that time, it never struck me that it was a format difference.!!

Checking up with some other techies and a lot of experimenting, finally brought it down to the AMD chipset which doesn't seem to be -r friendly.

The prob is that -r is more frequently and cheaply available. Where i live people don't even know the difference between - and + differences. I once entered a shop asking for DVD+R, and he replies sorry sir, we only have moser-baer, sony and tdk. I then asked if among those companies DVD+R was available and he smiled and repeated the same statement.

So, does anyone else have a prob like this and if they do, have a solution to this, cause i spend too much time searching for + media only

For CD's tho, it writes on both media

Have you checked the firmware of the drive to make sure it is up to date. What model is it?

If i remember right, that's the first thing i did.. Infact Samsung website claimed that there was no update in Jan '06

I jus checked the website, and apparently there is an update available now-claims to fix hang-up associated with CD-R, hopefully, it'd solve DVD-R problem too

Will keep updated

In case you don't know this: DVD+R format is recognized by your burner as a CD format. DVD-R is seen as such. Updating your firmware is definitely recommended. Also, AMD makes processors. The processor has nothing to do with reading media. That is done with your optical drive/drives. Most importantly, use good brand media. Verbatim , Fuji, Sony, Maxell.I would try this first: Go into your device manager & be sure your drive has DMA enabled, not PIO. Update your firmware if DMA is on. Careful: Follow instructions for this, because a bad firmware flash can render your burner useless. Your problem may be a simple as the brand/speed media your are using is not compatible with your drive due to the firmware.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Agreed. When flashing your drive with latest firmware, make sure ALL other apps are closed and that there is NO media in your drive. Also make sure you have the correct firmware for your drive model; it could be easy to mix up a few numbers or letters. All of these things can contribute to a bad flashing and the risk of a dead drive.

If you are unsure then ask...

Hello again,

i did the firmware update, and still no change. Needed to mention
1) It has no problem reading from DVD-r/rw, only writing to it
2) While burning using Nero, the last bit of info "Automatically setting book-type to DVD-ROM" never comes for DVD-R, but does so for +R media

I know AMD has nothing to do with it, very much aware of the format differences set by DVDforum and DVDAlliance.. Even my hardware profiles are set to "DMA if available"

Of course, it is the hardware combo that i have that seems to be a prob, there seems to be a hardware conflict with my capture card too. but don;t know much about solving resource conflicts. Never ventured in that area cause there's too much at stake.

Anyway, those posts were helpful, will keep working on this as long as i can

DMA if available does not mean your drive/drives are in DMA mode. Look under "current mode". If it say Ultra DMA Mode 2, you're good. If it say PIO. You need to correct that.

it does say Ultra DMA mode 2..

I wasn't aware that book type cannot be set with dash r. Thought it could be helpful..

BTw, i've heard that +r is better suited for video content--is this true?

NO thats not true

i used the DVD dash R for years with no problems
Its more of a quality blank media issue than anything (Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim being the best) and you burn speed (8x max.)

so you try setting Nero back to DVD-R and you should be able to burn a DVD-R disc fine <that was probably your problem all along

you guys seem to be stuck as to what's better the -Rs or the +Rs.... well here is a good read:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/print/article/113
why the +R media is better than the -R media

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?...0&Search=Search
and according to VideoHelp.com your writer can write to the DVD-Rs! So there has to be something going on where Nero isn't doing it's thang!!!! why not give us the Nero Log and let's look under the hood!

like i've already mentioned, other burning software fail too, like writing using Windows itself (Windows uses Roxio if i'm not mistaken). I've also formatted my sys (in jan), and tried burning -r disks before installing drivers for other devices (like scanners and printers), all with the same result, failure for -r and success for +r. Remember, this happens even when Windows is newly setup and all the default options were running.

Before installing this drive, I had a Samsung CD-burner (SW-252b). I set the new DVD burner as master and the older CD-burner as slave. Thinking that may be conflicting, i removed the CD burner (before and after formatting), all with the same result. I still have the stack of -r disks that i've wasted (all with only the lead-ins written). There are 12 of them which means i've tried atleast 10 different combos with various settings, softwares and changes!!

The first burn i tried wit a -r was with Nero vision 3, so was able to get a log error. It compiled the video and when it was about to start the burning process, reported an error and then produced the log-file. Other burns were done in Nero burning ROM causing Nero to freeze. This is a log file created when a failure occoured in Nero Vision 3. It stops with something in the registry. Some details relating to project contents have been removed (such as the video titles used and their segments)

Did that today, and wasted another -r disk, so firmware update is ruled out.. This log-file is from some time ago, so the old version would be mentioned. I tried getting the log-file from today's burn, but it froze and there was no entry.

Wat abt the entries just before "Burn process failed", do they make any sense

i know you say this is an old log, but this is all i have to work with; so....

Quote:
[14:28:48] NeroVision Nero API version: 6.6.0.15
- that's fairly up to date, but see 2 comments down, your burner isn't detected properly ie is too new for 6.6.0.15. see if this link to 6.6.0.18 works -
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Quote:
[14:28:48] NeroVision Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-W162C>Version: TS10
- TS11 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2078 dated June 2005

Quote:
[14:28:48] NeroVision Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1
[14:28:48] NeroVision Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder
- Nero is too old to recognise your burner, try 6.6.0.18

[14:28:48] NeroVision Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 1
- those disc seems to be supported in the burners' firmware as it's showing up in this section

[14:28:48] NeroVision Specified host adapter invalid
- i suspect this is something to do with ATAPI drivers (more likely lack of them), see next comment

- Not sure if Nerovision displays the ATAPI drivers in this section, the way Nero Burning Rom does (only Burning ROM 6.x lists the ATAPI drivers here, Burning Rom 7.x doesn't btw); fix ATAPI drivers via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

Before today's failed burn, the version is TS11.. Flashed it yesterday, and tried burning today (still a failure). Tried writing to a +r disk after that to check if the flash was successful and it burned successfully. The flashing utility also reports that the present version is TS11

there is one thing I would add Creaky......

Before udating to 6.6.0.18 I would save the serial #, uninstall Nero, then use the cleaning tools : http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
then do a registry clean up and defrag...... then reboot!

install package one (which Creaky supplied):
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
then install package two:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Patch_for_NVE3.html
reboot and you're good to go!
