I back-up my movies using Maxwell DVD-R 8X/4.7gb/2hrs sp mode, and I had no problems. Those were golden dvds and I didn't like them so I bought chrome ones(look better) and didn't pay attention and actually bought...Maxwell DVD+R 8X/4.7gb/2hrs sp mode (RW). I had no problems burning so I didn't think much of it, but the DVD+Rs don't work on my dvd players like the DVD-R do, they only work on my PS2 for some reason. What's the difference between them and why do the DVD+Rs only only work on PS2s?

Only if they are made in Japan, if not try Verbatims(mit), or Sonys(mij),fuji(mij)

(mij)=made in japan

DVD+R is a newer technology then DVD-R. If your burner supports booktyping, booktype future DVD+R's to DVD-ROM. That will provide maximum compatability among the various standalone DVD players.

Check my signature for more details...

PC: 2.8GHZ PIV, 120 GB HD, 1 GIG ECC RAM, GeForce FX 5600, Sound Blaster Audigy 2

CD Burner/DVD Reader: Lite-On LTC-48161H - Firmware KHOR

There's Mxl-Rg03 and Ritek-G05. Also there are some cmags-in all those gold maxell -8x discs.
3 different manufacturers on the identically same -8x gold tops.
That's why members suggest the packs that say made in japan. Those will yield the awesome maxell hitachi as apposed to the taiwanese ritek and cmags.

The plus format of maxells are very good. On their +8x,you'll get either Maxell-002-00 made by hitachi or Ritek-R03. Same applies, japanese= hitachi and taiwanese= ritek.A slight possibility of yet being cmags.

This means there's up to 6 different manufacturers for your maxell media.

Same applies to Sony and Fuji media. Try to get the japanese spindles for the higher quality media. They look identical, will even have the same exact price-but huge quality differences.

Then you have the compatability issue of both formats. Stand alone players may prefer a certain format from your burner. They can also prefer a certain format from a different burner. They can even prefer a certain MID coded media.Example of that is I had a ps2 that would play verbatim +4x mcc-002 media, but not verbatim +4x ricohjpn-r01 media.

Here's an estimate of how stand alone player compatability breaks down,of course it's up to your stand alone players and burners:

1) Highest success rate for players is booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom. This can only be done on certain burners.Example: Benq/Lite-on/Plextor/LG/and a few others.

2) If you have no booktyping capability for your burner, then the dash format should give you higher compatability vs the plus format.

3) Plus format only should be the lowest, compatability wise.

Thanks alot for all the help, I didn't know about booktyping or that japanese ones are better. What are the advantages of using DVD+R than DVD-R? When I use DVD-R I don't have to do anything just, decrypt, shrink, and burn. I bought some more maxwell DVD-R(gold ones) but these are 16X instead of 8X, there was a MADE IN TAIWAN above the barcode, is that what I was supposed to look for or is the MIJ on the DVD(I don't want to open the package untill I know for sure, if these aren't good I can exchange them).

you got the Taiwan ones...... it would say Made In Japan right on the spindle label or the box.... it wouldn't say it on the disk. Return them and try Verbatim if you can't find any MIJ!

and this is a good read:

The new copy (on the golden maxwell) worked just fine, no problems at all, as if you were looking at the original. I would like to use DVD+R, but my sony burner won't let me adjust the booktyping and I have no choice but to stay with the DVD-R. The MIT dvds seem to work on my Xbox, PS2, and DVD players so Iam happy for now, I will buy the MIJ ones next time just to make sure they will work on most dvd players. I have other Dual and regular burners(not sony) but I have an external burner right now(I have a 2000 model laptop, WinXP, Intel inside Pentium 3) I'm going to try and see if I can replace the sony one for another and see if it'll let me change the booktyping option to DVD-ROM.

Thanks all for your help!!!
