I personally own a NEC-3550a but would probably try a BenQ on my next purchase.
Now, for media. What is important is not really the media name, but the MEDIA ID on them. Several different names will have the same MEDIA ID because they are proabably made in the same plant and/or by the same company for this name company.
Avoid Media ID = CMC Mag like the plaig.
If you buy: Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden (Mostly Online), Maxell/Sony Made In Japan you will be ok, those are 1st class media.
Please do not look a prices, you will end up with elto crapo media.
Stick with the above media, and you will smile with joy.
The scary part is I saw some "Memorex (CMC Mag) known as MemoSux" more expensive that my 1st class Taiyo Yuden I have bought, now THAT'S SCARY !
Single Layer (DVD5) are cheap these days, but Dual Layer media are still a little expensive (To my taste).
Nero Burning Rom is very popular, but I personally use VSO CopyToDVD v4.0 to burn all my stuff !
