I might have this wrong, but all of these programs are transcoders, correct? (the only one i've used is shrink).

Can any of the regulars tell me the differences between them all in terms of speed and quality? Also, are there any better programs out there for reducing a DVD9 to DVD5? I don't mind spending cash to get a good program, but i'm not extending myself beyond £100~

Thanks in advance.

You can get the beta version of dvd rebuilder for free and it comes with hc encoder by hanks bundled in the software. Link is in my sig. After you learn how to use dvd-rb with hc encoder you can move up to the pro version which has many more features for $30 US dollars and you can also buy CCE basic which is faster than hc for $60 us dollars.

The quality of the 2 are very comparable. Encoding is very cpu intensive and always takes longer than transcoding. It's not recommended for those with slower pc's. I would definately try hc encoder before buying CCE basic. CCE will cut the encode time down by about 1/3. With my pc (specs are in my sig), a 6gb folder will take around 90 - 100 minutes average with CCE.

Encoders will always surpass transcoders in video quality especially on high compression projects. Good things come to those who are patient.

You can get CCE Basic here, it is a dl and 60.00 USD

It is faster than Hanks the quality is good, I prefer CCE but that is personal choice. Try out RB and see how you like it. I am a RB convert thanks to Mort81, and if you enjoy quality then you will enjoy the output of RB. Takes a little longer but the end result is great.

bookmarked the page, thanks for the help!

I'll take a look when I get home. Sounds like better value than splashing out on recode.

I'm good with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 with 3 passes (especially for movies that needed more compressions, 40% or higher) on 8X DVD+R genuine Taiyo Yuden and all of my backups are awesome on my 55" Widescreen SONY HDTV.

My second choice would be Nero Recode "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie" for movies that are 35% or lower of compressions needed.

Good luck hunting.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

That's not true. Shrink's transcoder will produce better results than CCE when only a slight amount of compression is needed.

MysticE,

It's really all in the eyes of the beholder when very little compression is required but anything requiring 20% compression or more an encoder will surpass a transcoder in video quality.

I'm with you Mort! I use AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 with the movies that are 80% quality or better! if the movie drops below the 80% mark I will determine if the movie is worth my time to do it with DVDREbuilder Pro w/CCE or ProCoder2! Most movies under the 80% mark for quality I do in DVD-RB. but if it's not a big deal I'll let the transcoder do it's job. Most of the time it's fine. But you can NOT beat DVD-RB! After years of use I still make donations to JDobbs for his fine product! Long live DVD-RB!

CCE and Procoder2 are two different programs. CCE Basic and Procoder Express can be had for 60.00 each. CCE Basic will only allow you two passes but generally 2 passes is enough, anymore than three and the difference is minimal, IMHO.
