one of my friends got an old computer from work but we cant gain access because the computer was networked and we havent got a password is there any way we can wipe the hard drive and start again with just windows

You are going to most likely have to reformat. get into the bios and get an OS install disk and you should be set

would the recovery disk from my computer work my computer is only 1 year old so its fairly up to date p.s thanks for the reply

not unless by some miracle the recovery disk is just a standard copy of windows. recovery disks like those issues by HP, Dell, etc, don't work with other models of compie.

Cant we just format it? Like, put windows XP [non-pirated of course :P ]
In, then in boot menu choose boot from CD, and enter your origninal CD key [also not pirated] and done.
