i want to buy a network adapter here in toronto....but i dont know where to get one. like.....the only place that has a network adapter is like amazon or something. is this because they hardly make them, or are there alternatives to buying a ps2 specific network adapter?

I don't know how you did not see network adapters anywhere in toronto other then amazon when I've seen them at most major shops that have a console section (futureshop, bestbuy, wal-mart, etc.) unless they have all pulled them off their shelves or sold all the stock they had?

many retails have started pulling them off there shelves. thats how i got mines at a ridiclously price cut. normal retail for the network adapter was AU$70 i got it for AU$5
the retail clerk told me that because the new ps2 were built in with network cards anyway, coupled with low demand, they were practically givin em away

Used game stores
Circuit City I think still carries them... You can find some decent deals on the net.. Just make sure you're getting a official SONY network Adaptor the cheap generic ones don't have Hard Drive Support..

i got it from harvy norman (computer superstore) not too long ago. they were having a sale, clearing all stock to go to a new building, and as a result there were plenty of things marked down. they were literally giving them away for $5

you may need to buy an additional router to share the internet connection between your computer and PS2 (although there are ADSL modems with built-in routers today, so you may not need that).
as for setting it up, and exactly what you need, here is a good site with a whole heap of information
