Are you ripping the movie to the hard drive first, or going direct from the DVD?

Rip with DVDdecrypter first and see if that won't correct the problem.

No need for AnyDVD on Over the Hedge-region 1.

You may wanna try right clicking the red fox icon-in the lower utility tray- and disable AnyDVD. Then give her a shot. That icon will gray out when disabled. Same right click/enable AnyDVD whenever you want to start her back up.

As usual DVDFAB Decrypter to rip (15 minutes) and have VobBlanker to process (5 minutes) and blank out all Trailers, some unwanted Extras and the DreamWork's logo. Finally, DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 to encode and burn with Nero Burning Rom. Backup came out perfect and flawless.

I did a second backup copy with RipIt4Me, transcoded with Nero Recode 2 via "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie", burned with Nero Burning Rom and it's awesome as well.

Best of luck to all.

A couple of you newbies said, "Shrink only on this one". That may be the case but at what percentage are you shrinking? Over the Hedge has a lot of stuff on it and the quality will not be good on a big screen TV. I used VobBlanker and still wasn't happy with the %.

What transcoder or encoder did you used? Like I said, I did 2 backups, one with DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 with 3 PASSES and it came out perfectly. My 2nd backup is with Nero Recoded 2 using "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie". I have Nero Recode take out all unwanted Audio & Subtitles, except the 5.1 English.

In prior to import to Recode, I have VobBlanker processed and blank out all unwanted Trailers, half of the Extras, some Warning messages, DreamWork's logo and Recode has a "Video Quality" of 82.9% (if I remembered it correctly), which now it needs 17.1% of compressions only. Backup came out pretty awesome and yes I do have a big 55" Widescreen SONY HDTV.

I have AnyDVD because it helps to run DVD Decrypter. I have Decrypter set up, the right way, to make a long story short!) After I decrypt I use VobBlanker to get rid of the unwanted material. Then I use Shrink because I prefer it over Recode2. I don't remember what my final ratio was but it was around 70%, or should I say in the 70's.

I really don't need AnyDVD, but I like the original DVD Decrypter over DVDFab. I have my CSS set up Brute Force -> I/O Key Exchange and my I/O set at ElbyCDIO - Elaborate Bytes (of course SPTI - Microsoft works well also), and with the help of AnyDVD I can decrypt anything.

Shink I have my output set at 4340 and I only burn with good Media. I like TJ -R made in japan. I buy them in quantities of 200 from supermedia when I get their sale add.

I have DVD RB but have never used it. I seem to be able to backup anything with the use of Decrypter, Blanker, Shrink, and Nero 6. Some might say it is a long process, but once you get it down it is pretty fast. I can decrypt in about 15 min. VobBlanker doesn't take long to process, it just takes a little while to go through the stuff. For example X-Men III had more preview on it than I knew what to do with. I watch the previews once, I don't need them on my backup! I was able to do that in the 70's also. Shrink is quick as long as you don't do the deep analysis. I don't use that unless my % ratio is too high. If it gets in the 60's I'll use it. Once that is done burn!

Sometimes when I help out newbies I turn off AnyDVD and use Fab. Then I run it through VobBlanker before I shrink. The hardest thing is explaining how to use VobBlanker. Maybe between the two of us we could make a guide on the use of it. Not specific to one movie, but to all movies. There is a lot of detail to cover!

Edit is in bold

Yes, Over The Hedge has a lot of unwanted Extras, that's why I love VobBlanker. It simply get rid of what I don't need and does its job beautifully. I know it (VobBlanker) does look complicated, but once after 3 times of using it, it's pretty simple. It's just 3 simple clicks of play/preview, blank and process that's all.

Sure we can always design a guide for newbies anytime (if they're interested in using VobBlanker). However, like you've stated earlier that it's hard to explain some of their tasks. Furthermore, it looks complex from the designed, but in reality it's pretty simple with 3 clicks only. Initially, I've acquired all these techniques from messing around (self study) by blanking and editing/stripping some unwanted scenes out at first. Suddenly boom... I just know where/what to "blank", which VTS, PGC or Cells to keep and what/which to trash it out. Afterall, I would have to agree that the more you (anyone) use this useful free tool, the more experiences you (he/she) will acquire in the end.

To be honest with you, I used to love DVD Shrink too, but once I got the hang of Nero Recode, it's hard for me to go back to DVD Shrink. In addition, Nero Recode is 1 time and 1/2 faster than DVD Shrink. Even with the same quality settings as Shrink's "DA + AEC + Max Smooth" whereas with Nero Recode's "Advanced Analysis + HQSR + Assign Best Quality to Main Movie" and it's still faster than Shrink. So far Nero Recode's quality has not let me down yet.

With top notch media like genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (Made In Japan by Hitachi Corp.) you should be ok with anywhere from 4440MB - 4460MB. That'll definitely help you to gain more quality simply because the more/higher MB you have, the less compressions on the quality.

I've been using nothing, but genuine TY, Verbatim and Maxell (MIJ)[/i]. That being said, all of my backups are at least 4440MB - 4465MB and I don't have any playback issues at all, according to my experiences.

You are right about VobBlanker. I used it two or three times before I started getting the hang of it. Occasionally I would still get something wrong from time to time, but after a while it becomes second nature to use it. For some reason I find myself using it even on movies that don't need it. Of course I don't want previews and FBI warnings and so forth on my backups anyway.

Another thing that I should have thought about is that most newbies don't take the time to learn new programs. They like simple, easy instructions. Sometimes, not all the time, you and I use three programs just to get the movie ready to be burned. I think most like quick and easy. In fact I had three newbies PM me with their email so that I would tell them the process that I follow. One of them sent back a reply where he basically explained to me that he skipped step 2!

What are we to do? We are all teachers and learners here, but I learned to follow instructions! In fact the first time I ever used VobBlanker was when I was having a problem with a movie. I did a search and followed a guide that you wrote to copy the movie. I think the movie was Hostage. After that I used VobBlanker several times before I started getting the hang of it.

Now that you'd brought the PM thingie to my attention, I can't even remembered the last time I replied to any of my PMs. I used to help out a lot, yes... even via PM and ShoutBox within minutes, but I've had enough from newbies, lol. My PM is somewhere over 500s, but after a while, I'll eventually delete them one by one and it'll build up again, bad idea.. lol.

Some will learn (get the answer) pretty quick when I gave them the answer or guide, yet some are clueless of what I've provided. Days after days, I thought to myself, "if one/anyone can read, he/she shouldn't be having problems." I even stated clearly as in "please read, follow the guide and steps carefully", but I guess none of them likes to read.

So in contrast I told myself, if these newbies doesn't read what's the point of providing the steps and guide? Sad but true.

Now getting back to the subject, yes I used 3 programs to get my backups done because I only want quality and perfection. And no it's not a long process, it simply is because we're more advanced and knows what we're doing, perhaps smarter. Even if I used RipIt4Me, I'm back to VobBlanker to take out unwanted junks in prior to transcode via Nero Recode or encode via DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP.

Why does everyone make this harder than it needs to be you should first start off with the easiest methods first then move on to the other programs Shrink was the only program needed for this one then whatever program you choose to burn with.

ThaOne-
That is what we more advanced users are referring to. If that worked for you then that is good. However, most people are not that lucky. 99% of the time there has to be a decryption before Shrink may be used. The other aspect that alkohol and I were discussing is that newbies don't know any better. Over the Hedge has a lot of information on it that needs to be removed to have a high quality back up.

Now if you like to burn your movies in the 90% ratio then I'm not going to stop you. But most of us like high quality on our backups. Read a little! There are many guides and uses of programs on this forum. Most can be done without any cost. Well, I should say that all can be done without any cost if you are willing to use three or four programs before you burn.

Alkohol & syxguns -

Point well taken. I've always used Shrink and if it worked - life was good - usually compression around 60-70% on the shrink meter so acutally 30-40% compressed. But that is usually the entire disk. I have three questions as I keep getting more involved in this:

1.) do you usually grab the entire disc or just the movie?
2.) if you grab just the movie - is there a way to grab extras - like on Hedge... if you wanted the Boomerang Adventure featurette.
3.) using VobBlanker - you can see the FBI warning but there are also black frames on each side of it - do you just delete the actual FBI cell / frames or all around it? I've only just done the straight click and process.

I've read the Cave guide but would love an advanced version for VobBlanker to actually see what you can or should not remove.

I use DVDFab; DVD Decrypter; RipIt4Me; Shrink; Nero Buring Rom - I'm going to start using Nero Recode 2 - never have before.

Thanks guys -

Welcome to AD. I see that you've got all the good stuff, DVDFAB Decrypter, RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS) and DVD Shrink (all of them are free, but extremely useful).

Answer #1: I usually grab the "full disc", I do want to keep a functional "Menu + Main Movie" and maybe just a few Extras that I really like only because I value the longevity and quality of my backups. So that's why I'm sucha "Blanker-holic" -- this free tool can do so much, especially if you like to edit out your movies in prior to transcode with Nero Recode or DVD Shrink. It simply blank out any junks (FBI Warnings, Trailers, Features/Extras, Rating Logo), cells, vts or scenes that I don't need it.

Answer #2: Yes, with VobBlanker you can do that to any movie. You can keep whatever your desire or simply blank out whatever you don't want (VTS, Cells, etc.)

Answer #3: To blank out any unwanted junks (FBI Warnings, Trailers/Features, Extras, etc.)

<<< To blank out a (any) VTS >>>
**double click on the VTS (or any VTS) under "TitleSet"
**click on Ini Size
**click on any/the PGC # that has the Ini Size & End Size
**now BLANK it out then OK or Apply then EXIT out.

<<< To blank out a (any) PGC # >>>
**click on the VTS under "TitleSet" that you want to blank
**click on the PGC # Entry under "PGCs in Selected TitleSet"
**then Blank it out

Hope this helps you a little. Again, the more you use and mess around with, the more experiences you'll acquire in the end. Good luck.

Great start - now a couple of questions. I started with ButterFly Effect 2. If I click on VTS_04 (the New Line Logo) - I see Ini Size: 15mb. If I double click on that it takes me to Menu of VTS 04 where I see 01 114k (Ini size) 114k (end size) - when I Blank it out my end size changes to 10k. Then down in the PGCs in Selected TitleSet I see 01 Entry, 02, and 03. - Do I blank all 3 or just 01 - which is the only one that has the size to it.

This may actually be a bad movie to start with....

Thanks again.

Revised:
I just did Hoot and kept the deleted scenes only and it worked great. Movie was 99% and extras were 78% - picture was great. Seems like a ton of clicking!!

Glad I could help. Yes, at first it seems like a lot of clicking, but trust me, I have my words and faith on you, after 3 or 4 more times (trials) of using VobBlanker, you'll definitely be quick plus you'll eventually mastered all the techniques. Like I said, the more you mess/play around with this extremely useful free tool, the more experiences and knowledge you'll acquire in the end.

I guarantee that you'll love all of your backups, especially "blanking" out all of those junks (FBI Warnings, Previews/Trailers, Extras/Features, Rating Logo, Commercials, etc.) and keep whatever you're desire. This will definitely produce a "better quality" on your backups with a fully functional "Menu + Main Movie + whatever you decided to keep."

Good luck and happing burning.
