Roxio is junk, but I suspect your media is as likely to be the culprit. Quality media is important, but it's also common that, when you change drives, the media you used to use so well doesn't get along with the new drive. See my sig on using quality media.

As far as burning software, I recommend either CloneDVD2 or at least use DD or IMGBurn to do the rips and then the burns. See if DD or IMGBurn helps. If it's not the software or the media then maybe there's something with the drive.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

First, roxio and Nero do not play well together if you have both of their packet writing software apps installed (nero's InCD and roxio's DragToDisk). I would uninstall roxio and keep Nero, the best way to do this is to run Roxio Zap, it will remove all traces of roxio from your system.

Get it here;
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Second, make sure your new plextor burner has the latest firmware installed, you can get it here by downloading the Windows Upgrade version 1.04;

http://www.plextor.com/english/support/downloads/firm_760.htm

Now, it's still unclear as to what is or isn't happening when you try and backup your movie (what movie is it?). What do you mean by:

What error/s are you getting if any? Are you having a problem with ripping the movie files to your hard drive or burning them to disk?

Use Anydvd and believe

As a test Im trying to copy an old copy of Forbidden Planet.Ive tried those programs trying to get it to burn a copy.It seems to be ripping it to the hard drive and creating the files.But I just cannot get it to burn to a DVD.Im using Verbatims'which I ve always used.Im not getting any errors unless I try Roxio which gives the usual protected media warning and wont copy.When I hooke up the drive the other drive was set up as a slave so I set this one up the same way.Should this one be set up as a master ?

Just to riterate that what I meant as an old copy is an original that is about 6 years old and clean as a whistle.

Well, if it's "protected media" you probably need DVD-Decrypter at a minimum to back it up.

Sounds like trouble with the hardware set up. So we need some more info. Other CD/DVD devices. Can it read DVDs. Will it burn a CD and or a data DVD?

Open the Device manager. Look at the DVD drives and IDE control. Have you tried to uninstall the writer?

What I don't understand is when I replaced my old cheap DVD burner with the really good Plextor DVD burner, there were no drivers on the install disc, only the Roxio burning program and their added amenities. Where did the drivers come from that are there according to Windows Hardware? The burner goes through the entire process of creating the file and burning the disc, but the disk is empty when finished.It plays DVDs'and has the best picture Ive seen so far. As I previously stated, as a final last resort, I tried the Roxio program that was on the install disc and got the "copy-writed material" message and could not copy. I usually use Shrink followed by Decrypter and have copied this disc before as a test and had no problems. I heard supposedly on some of the newer Sony burners they're incorporating hardware to guard against doing this. What gives ... are better burners not good and I need to replace it with a generic cheap burner due to high-end burner sleeping with Microsoft and copyguards ... like the old problem with Wizard VHS copy decks a few years back?

The drivers are from Windows. Look at the .sys and .inf files listed for drivers and compare to those in Windows.
A burner does not creat a file. Software like Shrink makes an .iso file which Decrypter will burn. If you have a DVD that has been copied before it will not have any protection.
