Problem: My school is having an auction on PC's they're getting rid of, but you're only allowed one buy.

I'm wanting to pick up a PC for the sole purpose of backing up my DVD's. What's the minimum speed I should look for? Will a 600+ Mhz handle the task of ripping and burning a DVD, using at least an XP platform? It doesn't have to be the fastest, but it needs to be able to work.

Any thoughts?

IMO a 700mhz-1GHZ CPU w/ ATLEAST 512 RAM would be perfect for a media PC, you could make do with alot less.

I use a 3.5Ghz w/ 2GB of ram for my ripping & burning, my old(er) 1.7Ghz w/ 740 RAM does the job fine also, a long time ago I did my DVD's on a 128MB ram 1ghz laptop, ran perfect, though considerably slower.

It should be able to handle ripping DVD's fine, could you get us the specs? :-)

I'll be doin' away with the zips on whichever one I buy, and upgrading to a DVDR (obviously), as well as upgrading the RAM. I've got an old ATI Radeon AGP video card that may get put in, if it'll work.

These are all the specs we're given.

They'll do, but you understand they aren't going to be amazingly fast..

Guess the job gets done.

Oh, I definately understand they're not going to be incredibly fast! I just wanted to make sure that they would be capable. Copying DVD's is what the PC will be dedicated to doing.... Nothing more, and it's not like I have a cramped timeline. As long as I can set it up at night, and it'll be done by time I wake up, I'll be happy!

Hi,

In that case I'm pretty sure that you'll ve pleased with it.

Get Item # 1050 -- $65 OBO, you need that extra HD space 'cuz when your burning app copys a DVD it creates temp files, which are notoriously large.

Good luck.

I think I'm gonna go with #1387. I already have a 200gig HD, just sitting at home waiting to be put in the machine I use for this purpose. The memory isn't an issue either, as we have a wide selection at home as well. I doubt I'll have to buy any to bump it up over 512. Plus, it's got the big Zip.... My uncle wants one, and I'll make him a deal: He buys the Zip, which'll pretty much pay for this PC!
