Around a week ago, I started getting BSODs everytime I tried turning my PC on. Windows would go as far as the welcome screen, and then the BSOD would appear. It's the same error each time too:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I'm currently running Unbuntu Linux from a CD, which is how I'm able to post this, and I have another PC in the house running Windows just fine. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? So far I've tried virus scans in safe mode, and re-creating the paging file, but to no avail.

Here are my PC's specs, if that helps:

Dell Dimension 5000
3.00ghz Intel P4 HT Processor
1gb ram
nVidia Geforce 6800 256mb PCI express 16x
Windows XP Home Edition SP2

If you need any more info, please ask, and bear in mind I'll only be able to work in safe mode while trying to fix the issue.

Any help would be much appreciated, and thanks in advance. I'll probably be posting this on a few more forums too, to get the problem solved quicker.

Thanks for the fix. Could you e-mail it to me please? I need Windows validation to access the file, but it won't work for some reason, even though my copy of XP is legit. I'd appreciate it if you could help me out again.

I managed to get the hotfix, but as soon as I try to run it, I get a BSOD.

The other day I tried my RAM in different slots, and it seems to have improved the situation. I can now use XP for at least 5-15 minutes before it crashes, but now, I get a different error:

0x0000008E (0xC0000005 0xF58C9D03 0xB89CAA28 0x00000000)

The third and fourth fields vary slightly, but the rest of the error code stays the same. Any suggestions?

From reading the thread so far, do you guys think it's a RAM problem? I'm considering just formatting the hard drive now, but that would be a waste if it was a problem with the RAM. So, what should I do now?

I did run memtest a while back, for around a dozen passes, and I got one error. I have two sticks of 512m RAM, so a single error means one of the sticks is damaged right? I tried both sticks on their own, and tried switching them around, but to no avail, so I doubt it's a RAM issue, unless a single can error can actually mean both sticks are damaged. Could that be the case?

Yeah, I did try leaving each stick in on it's own, but no luck.

make sure your RAM slots are clean and make sure the RAM sticks are clean too

One thing you might want to try just as an option is to boot into safe mode with networking and use Firefox and this site: http://www.windizupdate.com/ (windows update for other browsers than IE, not compatible with IE) to try to update your computer. Also when you ran the ram w/one stick by itself did you try each stick in a different slot? It does sound like a ram issue of some sort, otherwise memtest wouldn't have given any errors. Other than that I don't know what else to recommend.

Every night has its day.
Even forever must come to an end....
I think.

Thanks for all the help guys, I've fixed it. Basically, I took the easy way out - I backed up my data to an external HD, then restored my Dell PC to it's out of box state. Problem solved. Turns out it wasn't a RAM issue after all.
