I have a quick question regarding decode time. I read the FAQ and saw where it said your time will vary depending on a number of factors but after speaking with fellow Shrinkers from work I am curious now...
Running Shrink 3.2, with a P4 w/HT 3.0GHz CPU, 1 Gig of RAM, XP, SATA hard drive, Lite-On DVD-ROM and Lite-On DVD Dual-layer capable Writer. Updated firmware settings on both DVD drives, double-checked to see that DMA is turned on (verified with Nero Toolkit). Sooo, after all that, I still take between 45 mins to 1 hour to decode any movie. Burn time is about 10 minutes. Friends from work say they take about 15-25 mins total so I'm wondering what I am doing wrong, if anything. As far as DVD Shrink settings, quality settings have only the 'Compress video...' checked (Deep Analysis is NOT checked). I do NOT run other programs during the decode/burn process and Shrink doesn't have the 'Run in low priority mode' checked. Even my laptop takes about the same time and it's only a mobile 1.86Ghz P4 CPU. I've checked, de-checked, and then re-checked 'Enable video preview' but that doesn't change the time.
If by AEC controls you mean the Quality tab once I select Backup, I have it set to Sharp (default).
Could it be related to the fact that I pick Backup under Full Disc instead of Re-author? Or that I don't pick Analyze? I guess I figured that if I do a one-click Backup under Full Disc there won't be any wait time for user inputs and such.
Could it also be related to which files/streams I have picked to copy and not copy? For instance, I have all the menus and submenus and extras, but only English for the languages.

Yes if you have the boxed check under 'quality enhancements' under the quality tab this is probably why it's taking you longer.
Also more compression used the longer it will take also.
If you not interested in menus and the special features then use re-author mode to keep the compression low. Remove the unnecessary audios also. I usually just keep AC3 5.1.
Also if you haven't very recently do a disc cleanup and defrag.

They're wrong. Well, unless they're doing just the movie only. However, if using either "Deep Analysis + AEC: Max Sharp or Smooth", DVD Shrink should take at least more than 45 minutes --> 1 hr 30 minutes.
But why would anyone want their backups to be done so quick (15 - 25 minutes) instead of quality? Unless you or your friends plans to watch your backups on any TV under 27" only, then that's fine and it's up to you. The choice is yours.

Well then you guys are probably right - two of them swear that their decoding AND burning takes 30 minutes maximum, but they also say they don't check all the boxes on the quality tab. I have UN-checked the deep analysis box but have left the quality box for compression on Sharp, which is the default setting.
It's not as though I have to have the computer available during that hour or so of decoding and burning, just wondering why my time is 3x theirs, and it seems now, with your help here, I know the answer. :-)

Glad we all could show different settngs/compression/pc options that will make a difference time wise and quality wise.
Quality is in the eye of the beholder so if you're hapy that's all that matters :)
