what do you guys do if you get a good movie, and the compression ratio is like 50-60%? do you still back it up on a single layer DVD?

if not, do you use a dual layer...and if you do...how would you go about doing that with ripit4me/shrink?

I've had a war chest of dual layer discs. Recently, though, I've been using them a little more often. Like you said, if it's a good movie, and I really like it, then I'll use the DL disc.

If I don't care for the movie, I'll use a single layer disc. DVD Rebuilder is awesome for hefty compression rates.

Allegedly, Img Burn is great for dual layer discs. I haven't had a problem yet.

If the ratio of Video Quality says anything from 50% - 60% on both Nero Recode and DVD Shrink (meaning it needs at least 50% -40% of compressions to be transcoded), then I'll simply use DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 to handle the job. However, it's encoding process is not a joke, it can take up to 2 - 3 hrs max (depending on your system & specs).

I've never used ripit4me. But I do know that if you rip the disc to the HDD, those files will open on Shrink. Instead of hitting open disc, you'll simply hit the button next to it.

*Edit* I think I get what you mean. If you are using a DL disc, yeah, you can simply rip it as an ISO and burn it with whatever burning program you want. But when I do DL discs, I still rip the disc to the HDD and dissect it however I want (blanking the warnings, trailers etc., and removing all the other foreign languages). Then, with Shrink, change the settings to DL, and you'll have no problem. When Shrink is done, depending on your settings, it'll spit out an ISO file.

When I use a DL disc to backup a movie I rip with DVDFab Decrypter and then burn to DL using Imgburn in build mode. Here are some guides for you.

One thing everyone is forgetting is, it is not just about how much compression is needed, you have to take the bitrate of the movie into consideration too.

Example: say we have two movies, both movies need to be compressed by 50% one of the movies has an average bitrate of 6,000mb and he other 2,800mb now the movie with an average of 6,000mb will still look very good because it will still have a good bitrate of 3,000mb but the other movie will have 1,400mb which basically is crap VCR quality (just over) so you will notice a lot of artifacts (flaws), so remember the bitrate value needs to be taken into consideration before deciding on what to do.

Good call about the bitrate. It is very big!

Off the top of my head, movies like Alien or Star Wars are usually huge.
