I don't understand what you are trying to do...
Are you trying to get software to burn a dvd without a dvd drive?

I may have got the name wrong, When you record on to a DVD-R disc (not -RW) it has to be "finalised" (that maybe name I'm looking for)before it can be played on other dvd players. How can this be done if the machine it was recorded on is now broken.

Get a new machine. You have to have a working drive to do anything with a disc.

A new machine? LOL Ignore that ^ ^

What you are looking for is booktype.
You need a drive to do that with mate, so you will need a new dvd drive now. And one that suports booktyping.

@novice22...........
You are correct, with the term finalizing. A disc does have to be finalized, before it can be played on any machine. PC burners do it automatically, after burning. The standalone recorders make it a seperate step. I have a Gateway recorder, and have to make it finalize after recording.

I don't think it's gonna be possible to finalize your's on a PC. Without being finalized, your PC won't even see the disc. If it won't see it, it can't finalize it.

Do you know someone else with a standalone recorder? Maybe they can finalize them for you? Maybe you can rent a recorder for a day or two somewhere? If these don't apply, buying another recorder is about the only solution............
Good luck!

and just how is he supposed to do this with a broken machine? LOL...

glad you saw he was talking recorder...

@ Novice:

I wish I could suggest buying a new machine, finalise your disc then return the machine to the store... I can't suggest that though, it's just not right.

I have tried finalising the DVD on another machine, but because the DVD is not finalised it see's it as a blank disc. It would seam the only machine to do the finalising on is the one that recorded it, I think there is a lesson to be learnt here finalise you DVD's when your machine is still working.

Thank you for everyone's help
