I'm sitting here reading through all of these threads trying to locate a decent brand and model of DVD recorder, but most of what I am reading pertains to problems with the recorders. Is there a decent brand/model of stand alone DVD recorder for arond $160? All I would use it for is to record tv shows on DVD-RW discs...should I just stick with the somewhat trustworthy VCR?

If you're looking for cheap, there is a magnavox that Walmart carries for just under $100. I do believe that will fill your bill nicely, from what I've heard. As long as you keep it simple, you'll be fine. When you start getting into surround sound, HDTV,editing etc, that seems to be where all the problems are. good luck!

I have paid good money in the past for Phillips and ended up with 3 replacements due to faults. I would never buy Philips again.
I now have a Panasonic which so far is great and has good reviews but in the UK its about £200.

Have you thought about buying a PVR instead of recording to disc. Remember when you record to disc you are limited by the fact that a DVD holds only an hour of standard video without compression.
Anything you record longer than an hour will go through compression software in the recorder to make it fit on the disc. A hard drive eliminates this. I just wish I could afford a DVD recorder with a HDD in it as well.
