I am getting a new Dell Laptop. I need to transfer my music and pictures and videos to the new laptop from my desktop. So how do I do that without buying new software or wasting a cd.

Windows has an option that lets you transfer files from one windows system to another, all you'd need would be a crossover cable to connect your laptop to the desktop system.
Not sure what it's called in the english version of XP *as it's been a while since i've used it* but it's under system tools, should called "wizard for file and settings transfer" or something among those lines.

where would I get a crossover cable. Could I just use a ethernet cord that I already have.

nope, it has to be a crossover cable, and you get them at you local computer store, just ask the staff there for help
