I have some DVD video discs that appear to be blank (contain no files) when I check them in my DVD-ROM, (obviously they won't play), but they play fine on a standalone DVD player.

Can someone enlighten me the logic behind this?

Hi Kokomo
May need a firmware up date on the DVD-Rom if it's not up to date.
You can check the manufacturer's site or here: http://rpc1.org - just need the make & model.

Are these originals or backups?

Yeah it does - doesn't it - classic sign :)

Though sometimes it looks like older rom's and movies w/ the newer copy protection junk on them give them problems. Tks Hollywood (being sarcastic:)

ic.

yep, they're backups. so sometimes outdated firmwares prevent you from accessing the files in a DVDR/RW?

You got it Kokomo
One thing firmware does is teach the drives read/write( write for dvd/cd writers) strategies for media especially newer media.

Another thing may be poorer quality media - they tend to be less compatible with drives - sometimes even with the drive that burned it.

Burning at 1/2 the rated speed of the media may help the DVD-Rom recognize it better also.

So try updating the firmware if one is available and use good media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, made in Japan Sony & Fuji (usually made by Taiyo) or made in Japan Maxell.
