Hi all
I posted a thread about popups i kept getting apparently could have been due to my firewall and antivirus. I currently use Mcafee security centre 2007. My popups were due to my browser being hacked (mozilla Firefox). So thought i'd open a thread asking others what protection they use against hacking, spyware, virus and what internet browsers they use. So please anyone who reads this take 5 mins to tell us what you use and your opinion and help us all to stop these threats!

Thanks for taking the time to read this and enjoy the peoples reviews!

Well for AV I for one use AVG antivirus and I never had a virus problem since then. You can try using that or Nod32 or eve Kaspersky, I must say I tryed a couple of them and AVG is the best for me. For firewall I use Sygate, although the fw doesn't update anymore it's one of the best out there. (oh yes I also have the win built in fw, but it sux)
And finally for antispyware, Ad-Aware and Spybot, U can also try Spyware doctor I think that's the real name of the program...
I hope this helps.

And for registry jv16 and registry mechanic.

This is what I use

AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
the best FREE anti-virus program IMO

AVG Anti-Spyware Free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
Excellent software highly recommended.

Lavasoft Ad Aware Personal 1.06 http://filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 http://filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/

Firewall I use ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

I also use this to keep my system clean CCleaner http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Hope this is of some use to you :)

I have been using Kaspersky for a few weeks now and am very happy with it. I also use Defender, Window washer & System Mechanic Pro 6, seems to keep it running pretty sweet!

Mcafee is very good but like Norton uses alot of system resources. I have tried Nod32 which kept blocking Limewire and saying it was a virus, same with AVG. ZoneAlarm just kept blocking Azureus for some strange reason! Like everyone here we are after a very good anitvirus and firewall protection which uses hardly any system resources! I even tried Nvidia firewall was excellent when it wasnt blocking all programs and it would let you change the firewall settings!I use Spybot and XoftspySE for spyware which are very good. I use Advanced Uninstaller for system registries and clearing junk along with PC Bugdoctor

Getting great responses! Keep it up!

P.S
bkf:- Mcafee works fine for me, no probs so far

I have tried various combinations and the following works fine:
1/ PC Tools spyware doctor
2/ Ewido anti-spyware
3/ Spyware blaster
4/ Avast anti-virus
I also use a ADSL router with firewall, NAT and MAC address filtering.
I've had this set-up for over 6mths and had no problems at all and my
networks on 24/7.

To check how good your firewall is go HERE and run the first 3 tests.

My results

File sharing:

Quote:
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.
Common ports:

Quote:
Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet ? solicited or otherwise ? was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

Pazzini:
I find FF 2.0 to be very slow on loading some web pages, not all ,but some compared to FF 1.5 loading the same pages.
Also FF 2.0 doe's not always load my full list of bookmarks and i have to re-start it.
I'll give it a few months to let the bugs get sorted and i might give it another try.

craig1984,

When I had Mcafee before the upgrade the NETBIOS test Failed as it showed information about my PC. I was hoping someone with Mcafee would do the test so I could see if they had improved there product.

I will still never buy Mcafee again though.

I think Mcafee is very easy to use. Once i find a suitable replacement then i'll swap. Thats why i decided to start this thread, to see what others have and there reviews about them. Not some consumer comments that are just trying to sell a product than the truth! So i have had bad experiances with Zone Alarm, Nod32 and AVG. But others may not have had the same problems. Some posts on here about firewalls i've never heard of so will give them ago. They are all a great help and i think others well hope it will help others as much as me.

What problems did you have with ZoneAlarm? You probably just did not set it up correctly. I have no problems with ZoneAlarm or AVG. In fact AVG found viruses where Mcafee did'nt when I had AVG as backup to Mcafee.

This might be of some use to you http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/292257
