I would just like to know, What got you guys (The older members of AD) into the Computer scene? Most over 40 year olds i know don't even know how to unzip something... What drove you guys to learn not only how to use the computer, but how to become experts? Can anyone can field this question?

I got into computers in an unusual way. I had a friend who taught web design, photoshop and a number of other things at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. One of my hobbies at which I'm quite good is painting (oils, acrylic) and drawing. My buddy kept telling me that he wished he could paint and draw because it would put him head and shoulders above his competition who, apparantly, use photo and art galleries for photos/art which they'll maniputlate for whatever purpose. He should me what he could do with some of my works and I was amazed and wanted to learn how. He had moved away though so aside from the basics, I never got all that good.

Most of my interaction on this site is in the home theater forums.

in the good old days, like the years 1957 i was working for RCA and going to collage at night..for my engineering degree..
i sees this ibm computer..to buy it cost a arm and a leg..

so i decided to build a computer, and the rest is history..

one thing was nice all the parts were free,as even me boss jumped on the band wagon to build one along side with me....

I'll try to make this as short as possible.
In high school I learned to make my cars go faster than they should.
In the Army I learned to build Nuke warheads (yes the big one).
After that I did 25 years repair work on Appliances and Electronics.
The last 12 years I have been a service manager. I always enjoyed learning new things. I got into computers because a business owner I new years ago asked if I could look at his system that had been repaired several times but still not working right. I had to fix one of the main boards but got it going for him. After that I decided to build my first system and 2 more since that. I'm now 58 and still trying to learn as much as I can. My daughter and son-in-law are programmers so I pick their brains when we get together. Thats about it. I still like fast cars, LOL.

Lexz, do tell me, are you an "older" AD member ?
Does what you said have ANY relvance to the question asked ?
Maybe i'm just being a nitpick here, but i personally refrained from posting in this thread as i feel i *as part of the somewhat younger generation of AD croonies* have no place here, and in my non humble opinion, neither do you.

Well, seeing as i'm still here, i'd say that last one isn't going to happen.
Also, again, i fail to see how your response has anything to do with NicHt's question.
He asked the older members here what drove them to becoming computer experts, and i fail to see what your story about you buying a 360 and getting booted off AD adds to that.

@ Jorahan *i know, not your name anymore, but nicht sounds a bit too german too me* : I think it might be a good idea for you to read Kevin D. Mitnick's "The Art Of Deception" and "The Art Of Intrusion", they offer unique insights to the computer expert's world and mindset, also offers some explanation of what a hacker really is, and why they do what they do.
Some might argue these books offer just insights into the security side of computers, but if you read carefully, and take the time to really delve into it, you'll really get an understanding of the mindset they have, and what drives them to learn all the stuff.

Actually, if i count my previous account here, like you did, i outdo you by two months...
But let's not get into a nitpicking contest, shall we?
Your speeches are confusing enough as is.

Well I missed my chance, I was going to take bets on how long
LexZ would last before he was once again "banished"...there is a further opportunity as I wll be taking bets once again after his re instatement,.

Now I DO call myself an old timer...I've got 2 (now) teenage kids so I had to have a little fiddle with their comp while they were at school, now there is 4 computers in the house. Cheers

Present betting is at 2 to 1.

BTW whats the female for "old Fart"??? Old Fartress??

gwen: i put $10 down on november 23 :-P and i think "old fart" for females is "gwendolin" :-P

ireland: young farts have less of a hump in the back and a few less wrinkles...but those are the only differences.
