I have a professionally softmodded xbox running evox as the default dash(its got the evox dash,Dvd2xbox,xboxmediacenter and dvd region x)
I was hoping to install one or more of the other available dash's, particularly avalaunch because of the FTP boost feature.
I do not want to SWITCH my dash cuz I did'nt install this one, and I dont want to get in over my head with irreversible changes.
So CAN I INSTALL EXTRA DASH'S AND RUN THEM AS APPS?

Yes. Can you FTP into your xbox?

Elliot: Hey, do you, uh, think I could come back some time and play with your Xbox?
Karen: Anytime, kid.
Elliot: Bye.
Karen: Oh! Well, would you look at that? This game is called an Xbox. Well. Ha ha ha...

yes I can FTP (took me awhile but the tutorials here finnaly got me straightened out(OR maybe it was one over at xbox scene that you guys linked to, It was the one that tells you how to connect using internet explorer, then I started using smart FTP))anyway great just a few more questions
A. can I run dash's out of the "f" drive (I have'nt downloaded them yet, but if teh filesizes are very big it might be a concern as I only have about 3 1/2 gigs in "E")
B. which ones are good, I've heard good things about avalaunch's upgraded FTP capabilities but I dont know much about neXgen unleashX or others(anymore?).

Well dash boards only take up like 12MB...XBMC takes up 47MB but that the biggest one...Avalaunch is great dash for FTP and stuff..and UnleashX is the most reliable dash u can have its user friendly and is easy to use...NexGen is desighned for your xbox to look 3D it has amzing graphics and stuff...But as a default dash i would go with unleashX no doubt...and there hundreds more like BlackstormX,MS lite, and DSK plusX..lots more

Thnx man
I was kinda worried about the file size thing(I can do the intermediate end user stuff (burn bootable disks, extract ISOs with quix, and FTP) but I did'nt really feel up to Idiot-tackling something like as complicated as repartioning the drive)
So im geussing E/APPS?

Ok so now I just gotta get me some.
can I ask where to look for them here?
I was looking around for UnleashX links on xboxscene, but they seem to have banned them under their no piracy policy.
I know that there is the same policy here, but I thought dash's were homebrews and thus safe legal and delicious.
If so links/referances to pages I should hit for Unleash/avalaunch or any others that are worth looking at, would be appreciated.
if any of this post is innappropriate(rules of the boards wise)I apoligise in advance and I will edit as neccesary.

Thank you thank you thank you
you may not belieive this, but I was up most of last night looking for these downloads(try 4 30 am). and every link I found up till know was dead(and yes I tried searching these boards, but none of the keyword combo's I could come up with yielded anything more than countless backup burning tutorials(I geuss they all mention "download"ing and "avalaunch" or"unleash x" in one way or another))
I was at some site called xbox-hq that pretended to offer the Avalaunch dash but after cliking on numerous BS ads I was told "sorry members only" and the site hit me up for money.
anyway I go to my weary bed looking like something that should be chewing on bruce campbell's soul(wild of hair, red of eye etc.)figured all was lost.
checked the thread again this afternoon, still nothing.
so here I am its getting late again figured I would try on last time here before trying to figure out a way to look on IRC,
And lo and behold the way is made ready.
PAN5Y comin' thru with the treats!
(cant believe it was here all along!)

EDIT: didnt want to double post but I did'nt have the question untill after I unRARed the avalaunch.
In the read me it had a warning about modifiying the eeprom.
now I have no intention of monkeying around with the EEPROM manualy, but I couldnt tell if it was saying that I could mess things up by simply installing/running the dash and its regular features.
any help appreciated,
Trying hard not to F*** up my box.

Ok srry it took so long to get back but things got hectic in the real world for me.
I tried out UnleashX and it worked fine.
However avalaunch wasnt so good.
I put it in F:games to start out with cause I had a lot of space here, but it dos'nt show up in the game list(unleash dose but not avaluanch).
next I tryed creating a folder called "Apps" in the E: drive and put avalaunch there, butb it dosen't show up in the evox Apps menu either.
I can access it if I execute the avalaunch.exe in media center's "my files" but as this is a pain in the neck please tell me how to make evox recognise the apps folder.
TIA
(btw unleash is pretty awsome)

no I back up games to my xbox hd with dvd2xbox(which came with the EVOX package that my mod guy installed)
But I want to use avalaunch for its FTP boost capabilities.
I was hoping to get it to appear in evox's apps menu (or anywhere really, other than buried in "my files")
where does evox look for "Apps"?
there didn't seem to be a folder already, and the one I created and put Avalaunch in wasn't recognised by the evox apps menu(I tried making one in both E: and F: )

yeah I've got unleash running properly(but havent had the chance to explore its features yet)
when you say "backing up games" do you mean to the xbox hard drive(mines a 200gb)or burning bootable hard-copy backups.
Ive been putting games in the F:/games directory with dvd2xbox for about a year now(this came with the evox package and was my only option before I got my pc)
and im just getting the hang of burning xiso's right now (got some Taio yuden(sorry I cant remember the spelling right now) media and burnt my first one two nights ago)
As for FTP yes I learned how from you guys and the guys over at xboxscene.com, and have had much success with SmartFTP, but its pretty slow.
Hence why I want avalaunch and its boost mode to work better.

And finnaly yeah, I tried creating a folder called "Apps" in the E: directory(partition?) but when I scrolled down to "launch menu" in EVOX and pushed the "a" button and GAMES and APPS options came up(like always)but nothing was in the apps menu?
this has happened before(things not appearing in menus, even after i've installed them)like when I tried to install "xbox music mixer" in f/games.
the files install properly on the hard disk(cuz if I enter xbox media center and go into "my files", dig up the relevant folder, and execute the .exe the programs run fine)but they dont appear in EVOX's launch menus.

NOTE:
I did capitalisethe word Apps when I made the folder in E:
could this have caused my problem?

unleashX is my favorite dash if u wanna back up a game meaning(put it on your HD) go to

SYSTEM + MISC + COPY DISK...

after that it goes directly to your games folder

just use the game backup feature from the unleashx dash, its much easier and straightens out the problems of where the apps n stuff go.

YOU win some, YOU lose some, either way I WIN

Hello to all as I am a newbie to Xbox modding, but not a newb in general as I have been a PC junkie for the past 10 years or more and am quite skilled overall. I'm picking up this whole Xbox modding stuff fairly quickly now that a friend pointed it all out. My Xbox had been collecting dust since I purchaed it many years ago but now it sits center stage as my awesome Media Center system connected to a 65" HDTV. It can be a bit frustrating tracking down all the best info needed to get the most out of your Xbox so I will share what I have found so far and hopefully it will make it easier for others. I'll end this long terse here and start another one now to list my tips.

TIPS TIPS TIPS
You should be able to see the Avalaunch dashboard in the Applications section of any other currently running dashboard (UnleashX and XBMC are what I use with the former being the default startup created with the SoftMod 3.1 toolkit) by renaming the avalaunche.xbe to default.xbe (found in the Avalaunch folder). Avalaunch has been useful for two things: the speedboost when FTP'ing games to/from the Xbox using the awesome Qwix application running on my PC, and for automatically "fixing" games that would only boot to black screens after launching. Yeah, I had 2 or 3 games so far that would copy OK but just went black when you tried playing them. Avalaunch had no problem making the games work and from then on, they worked from within ANY dashboard! Simply awesome.

For general FTP tasks I like the free FileZilla, but for transferring game ISOs from the PC the the Xbox, nothing beats Qwix. There's even a batch mode so that you can simply queue up a dozen or two games and let 'er rip. It also creates ISOs on your PC from any game already installed on the Xbox like a breeze! Best of all... it's so darn easy to use.

I've used both a 120GB and now a 200GB hardrive in my Xbox - helps to check out drive compatibility first at http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=statistics . I too was having some trouble getting the extra space and the G drive to show up, but I finally got the setting right on the UnleashX dash configuration to enable (and rememberd to SAVE the option) it.

Best to reboot your Xbox after transferring files or making setting changes in the dashboards to guarantee you see the new stuff, games, option changes, etc..

I'll post more tips as I find the useful ones or if I can help answer some other questions with them.
