This is probably a realy silly question... but the computer I use for backing up movies isn't hooked up to the internet. So, none of my programs are getting updates... Are there updates for programs such as decrypter and AnyDVD that come out often?

I tried to backup Cars using just shrink and AnyDVD but failed, tried using DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD but it failed too. I have seen many posts that say DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD will work just fine.

@ticctech,
To copy Cars I did this:

Disabled AnyDVD

Open Decrypter, Select Mode > ISO > Read

Selected the original DVD as the source, Selected a folder on my Desktop as a target.

Started Decrypting.

When that was done, I closed Decrypter and opened DVD Shrink.
Selected File > Open Disc Image

Browsed for the ISO in the folder on my desktop.

Reauthor mode > main movie only (Title 23), removing subtitles and keeping only the AC3 5.1-ch English.

Target Settings:
In this case I burned to a HDD folder location but could have told Shrink to burn with Nero, CopyToDVD or ImgBurn.

Quality Settings:
Selected Deep analysis. I did not use the adaptive error compensation.

Started the process.

Once that was done I used CopyToDVD to burn the movie at 6X to Taiyo Yuden TYG02 8X DVD-R media.

Alkohol used a similar method, using Decrypter in Files mode.

I did not try this with AnyDVD activated. I'll activate AnyDVD and open the disc in Shrink and see what it does.

As far as program updates go, Updating AnyDVD is important. Updates come out very often. Current version is 6.0.8.2. Download (1.25 MB) and copy it onto a CD or floppy from a PC that does have access, like the one you are using to read this.
The last and final version of DVD Decrypter is 3.5.4.0. If you have that then you are fine. It will not be updated, development has ended.

@ticctech,
Shrink with AnyDVD worked. Movie only to HDD 12 minutes 46 seconds. So make sure your AnyDVD is updated.

I'll try it with FabDecrypter next...

That worked too. AnyDVD disabled, Main Movie, Total Time Elasped: 00:11:02

alright, tried shink 3.2.0.15 and AnyDVD latest version, started to read disk and came up with error - "incorrect function". Trying with decrypter alone right now.

Nope, no good. Came up with an error again. I am wondering if maybe it is a disk problem?? Going to keep trying. Got my hands on a different copy.

@ticctech-

Having a non-internet production computer is a really good idea for security reasons. Corporations that don't get regularly owned by hackers run non-networked production machines or non-internet VLANs. You're doing the smart thing.

Have you tried Ripit4me? Seems lot of folks here think that Ripit4me is the ticket when all else fails. You have DD, DVDShrink, etc. so all you need is Ripit4me itself.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Dunker - Yeah, I keep all my personal info and important files on the non-internet computer. It is my newest one too...

So get this, I try backing up a different disk of Cars and it worked. Decrypter saved it to hard drive, shink it and then burn with Nero. Weird and frustrating at the same time. To anyone having troubles... could be a bad disk.

Thanks for the advice... =)

@alkohol

I finally got Cars backed up - it was a bad disc as previously stated. I went into VobBlanker and killed everything except the two featuretts and the movie and the THX logo (I like the sound in my theater) so - what happens is it play in AC3 5.1 through the opening and THX logo and then when the movie starts it drops to AC3 2.0 - I can go set it in the menu to change to 5.1 and it plays fine. Any idea why? Do you have same results?

Thanks again - bad disc - spent 4 days on that! New one - 30 minutes.

Hi, I see people are experiencing problems backing up Cars, I too have this problem, it freezes at 6% and says it cant read D:/, but the dvd is brand new and purchased today. It seems to freeze on the subtitles menu when looking at the preview screen, but when I use re-author and try just the movie, same thing happens but at 0%. Im using DVD Shrink 3.2

You need to read the post right above yours. Shrink, by itself won't work on this movie. Its needs extra help as stated in the post above yours. The latest version of AnyDVD (needs purchased) will work or use the RIPIT4ME method listed by Creaky and Arniebear.

I used CloneDVD and AnyDVD with no problems at all. Tried both full disc and movie only. Compression on full disc was slightly too much but did work.

That worked brilliant, thanks.

Just one thing, it doesn't seem to read on my dvd player, however, my portable dvd it works on. Is it just because I used dirt cheap DVD+R's?

- i'd say probably yes, maybe not but cheapy media usually equates to cheapy results

Thought so! 4 DVD+R's for £1, they were bound to be rubbish. Thanks for everything though, finally used the DVD writer after 2/3 years of owning it!

Will now try better disks, cheers.
