PS2 Modding with a non working DVD rom

I want to put a harddrive in my ps2, but my dvd drive is 99% not working. Is there any way I can mod it without using the dvd rom? And no mod-chip? I have a version 4 and no problems with doing any computer work needed if this helps

Not really. If you wanna run games off the hard drive, you have to buy HD Advance 3.0, which is a dvd, which boots your hard drive.

Or you could try the memory card exploit, which i have found to be a HUGE pain in the bootiehole.
