This is caused by a new copy protection system on the DVD. Can I suggest you try DVD FAB or Clone DVD with Slysoft Any DVD. Hope this helps. DVD Shrink does not seem to be keeping up with the new protection systems.

Cheers

naicidrac,

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
failed to read file x:\ data error cyclic redundancy Data error

Possible causes (some you've been told of already):
The disk is either badly scratched, diry/smudged in areas where info can't be read correctly, a bad press (digitally faulty), or copy protection shrink can't handle because of its discontinued support/advancement.

-If the disk looks dirty/smudged, clean it, then try again.

-If it's copy protection that's causing shrink to spit out the error... then try any one of these options:

1) DVDfab decrypter, it's a very good and supported free whole movie ripper/decrypter. Use it to rip the video files to your HDD, open the files ripped using shrink and proceed as you normally would.

DVDFab
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

2) Ripit4me, it takes the ripping/transcoding/and burning process and makes it a one click task. You'll need DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and FixVTS to make it all work.

Ripit4me
http://www.ripit4me.org/

3) Download and install the trial version of AnyDVD. Once installed, run DVD dhrink as you normally would to produce a backup, AnyDVD runs in the backround to crack the copy protection on the disk.

-If the disk is clean and any of the above methods fail, you could have a possible bad press, if so then you'll need to exchange it for another and try it again.

@naicidrac I don't want to hijack your thread but I have a question further on this subject...

Now I've dealt with the same error, and I'm going to follow everyone's advice to complete this project. The question I have is this - I'd like to make a backup with complete menu's and adverts, how do I do this with the above mentioned programs?

Don't re-author the DVD files, choose full disk backup.

"Don't re-author the DVD files, choose full disk backup."
That's with Shrink though.

With the DVD Encryption I have to rip it to my HD, and then backup with Shrink or any other programs right? If that's the case, are their any certain options in DVD Decrypter (or any other Ripper) that has to be selected for the *entire* movie?

DVDfab Decrypter will do a full disk backup, the files will be ripped to a location (of your choosing) on your hard drive, open the files using shrink and choose full disk backup.

Ripit4me also uses shrink and will prompt you for your rip settings/preferences. As shown here, choose Movie+Menus.

Anydvd is a driver that runs in the backround to help DVDshrink crack the copy protection on the disk, just download and install the 21 day free trial of AnyDVD (you'll see a little red fox in the lower right hand corner of the task bar to let you know it's running), run DVDshrink and choose full disk backup proceeding as you normally would.

Here's a guide for using DVD Decrypter to backup the entire DVD menus and all, once it's done, open the files using shrink and choose full disk backup.

Everything was going well... Until this error appeared. I used

-DVDFab Decrypter (Full Disc Option)

-Opened DVD Shrink > Open Files > Double Clicked on the video_ts folder > Backup > Error followed after 5 minutes or so...

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue
Programming error - exception occured

Try using ripit4me, it takes a while to setup, but works well. Here's a good guide by arniebear:
