I have a 1 month old Athlon 64 3500 with 512 RAM and all of the sudden today the CPU won't go below 100% usage. Well when it boots its fine. Browsing folders is fine, using notepad fine. But when ever I have IE or Outlook, or Photoshop open the usage goes all the way to 100%. With whichever of those programs that is open taking all the resources. I haven't tried any other programs. 1 IE window will do this. Ran Adaware, Spybot, Ewido(safe mode) and it just cleared up cookies. AVG Anti-virus, and Zone Alarm installed. Computer worked fine on Friday.

Here is HijackThis log:

AVG Virus Scan in Safe mode found nothing. How do I fix this?

Also Firefox seems to work fine as a browser, but IE doesn't. I know the story I should probably be using Firefox anyways but I am still need to fix this problem.

Update 11-7 2:53pm
OUTLOOK.EXE is fine till I try to type a message and then WINWORD.EXE goes 100%. Then when I end task for winword, outlook goes 100%. Maybe I need an update to Office??? M$ won't let me use their updater without IE, and IE is crapping out. grr.

Does anyone out there have any ideas about this???

I thought it may have been linked to a bad office install but I just uninstalled and reinstalled Office Pro 2003 and it still has problems. I can't update office because IE is still going to full cpu usage.

I am getting closer and closer to the last straw and reformatting. I don't want to do that because this is my computer at work and I will basically lose an entire day to this.

Run an online scan with Kaspersky.

You'll need IE to use the scanner and since your IE is basically unusable, try the IE tab extension for Firefox. Download it from here. Install it and then run Kaspersky from Firefox and post the log.

Firefox extension did not work as it made Firefox jump to 100% usage. Just for fun I downloaded IE7 and tried that. IE7 shows 100% cpu usage, but doesn't slow down my computer. Also I have now noticed the software for my wireless network card will occasionally use 100% CPU and lock me up but if I "End Process" it, things go back to normal. File for wireless nic is WMP54Gv4.exe.

If this comes out clean, this is not a malware problem. I really don't know what could be causing this either.

Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) to the desktop from here.

Open it and click Accept Agreement.
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
It will create a log on the desktop named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan)
Post that log in your next reply.

More fun and excitement. CuteFTP Pro also runs my cpu usage up to 100% and I can't do anything on my computer. Any suggestions for a new FTP program? Free preferably.

so I take it after scanning this computer with everything known to man except an x-ray machine or CAT scan that it is completely a lost cause.

Bummer. Well I have found temporary work-arounds for the programs that are causing problems. I guess one weekend I will have to come in to work and back up everything and reformat.

One good thing to come of this. I think I might have become a Firefox user.

Yes, it seems that way. I'm sorry I couldn't assist you further.

Using Firefox will save you from so many malware problems you wouln't believe it. Although, with the new IE 7 there have been some major security updates, but nothing compares to Firefox!
