Hi guys.
I have the same device I/O error but I have more than just the I/O problem. This is the situation: I have tried backing up a DVD with possible copy protection. I received the error "The request could not be performed due to an I/O device error"
Ok so i remove the offending disc that caused this and i revert back to test a DVD i have backed up only half an hour before. This disc will not back up anymore either and the same I/O device error appears. I can now no longer copy any disc using my dvd drive on my computer. I havent been able to copy anything since then. To make things worse, I used another PC in another room, and this one copied fine a random DVD. But i then tried the original offending disc in my example above, and again, no more copying can be done. The discs are not dirty they are brand new. Running Windows XP on both PC's. My actual DVD burner hardware seems to be broken completely although i havent tried burning a cd or anything like that.
I have uninstalled Nero and DVD Shrink nothing will fix this problem.
Please any help would be appreciated I can not copy even my own DVDs anymore.

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like the I/O error is due to a defective drive/burner, looks like you need to replace it with a new one.

Use Anydvd and believe

jms316 ,
You might try this. Use DVDFAB Decrypter or Ripit4Me to rip the DVD to the HD and then process w/ Shrink afterward

thanks guys. i tried a trial version of DVDFAB and it backed up multiple discs for me without the use of DVD Shrink at all. The orginal movie which caused the error in the first place seemed to backup but the disc doesnt play in a dvd player. Which is fine I will play around with that.
So I can safely say now its not the DVD drive itself. It seems this particular disc, the cartoon 'CARS' corrupts something in DVD Shrink and uninstalling and and reinstalling shrink doesnt fix the problem. It may even cause the problem in Nero. Problem solved for now. thanks again

jms316 ,
DVDFAB Decrypter is free and there is no trial period. Cars has RipGuard and Shrink can not do it. That is why I suggested you use the DVDFAB Decrypter and rip it to HD and then use Shrink. If you have this problem again you might also have to use VobBlanker after the ripper and then use Shrink. VobBlanker corrects the structural problems the DVD Company created

thanks for that. maybe i didnt use DVDFAB decrypter. i think it was DVDFAB GOLD. I dont know the difference. but it worked.
One more question, you seem to know the CARS dvd has ripguard...how can i know if a DVD has ripguard in future? And why does rip guard disable DVD Shrink for DVD's i try to backup that definetely dont have ripguard?

Below is the info in Cars. I used AnyDVD to get this info. Shrink has not been updated in about 3 years so the decryption algorithm is a little old and that is why it needs help to decrypt the newer movies. RipGuard will stop Shrink and cause problems so it is better to use another ripper and then use Shrink.

You might consider buying AnyDVD as it is $39.00 and well worth it. It does have a 21 day free trial offer
