Not to sure what to use here.

Here's the problem. I used to use DVD-R's but they won't read in my DVD player. SO does that mean I need to use the other kind? And will one work and not the oter one>

Hi there,

In your DVD Player manual, it should tell you if it will read

DVD-R / DVD-RW
DVD+R / DVD+RW

Maybe it does read DVD-R but you used Low Quality DVD-R and it's giving your DVD Player some issues just to read it ?

What's the brand name and model # of your burner?

What programs are you using? Ripping/Compressing/Burning?

If that stand alone player won't play your dash backups, you'll have to try some plus.

Dash format is higher than plus format. But certain drives can booktype the plus format to dvd-rom,making them very highly compatable on stand alones.

Let us know what burner you have and maybe we can get it to booktype.

You may be able to get some feedback on your player here:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php

Some players prefer dash, some prefer plus, both, and even none. By booktyping, you'll fool those players into recognizing your backups. A lot less no disc errors.

I'm not sure if i'm asking my question(s) in the correct place here. If not, I apologize.
I would like to begin backing up some movies as well as my kids ps2 games. I've been reading the forums for the past couple of weeks and have a basic idea of what to do. This is a great site, with an enormous amount of useful information.

I have Windows XP/home, a DVD Rom drive, and I just bought an External DVD Burner (SONY DRX-830U...DVD_+RW/+_R/RAM/cd 18x) and Nero software suite was included. I also just ordered some Taiyo Yuden Premium 8x DVD-R Media Silver Thermal Lacquer disks.

My 2 questions are.....Is the SONY Burner that I bought going to be able to handle my backup needs? ...and...Am I headed in the right direction?

Sorry I'm so long winded, and thank you in advance for your advice and assistance !!

I'll take any DVD+R from TY, Verbs or Hitachi Maxell over any DVD-R, any day and any time; especially "book typing" them into DVD-ROM.

This reply would be for saugmon and anybody else that wants to answer.

You asked me what kind of burner i have. It's a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P65 and i'm burning with Nero (if you know of a better program let me know). I'm also trying to play it in a JVC dvd player (this is where my problem is) it'll work fine in my ps2 but not in the dvd player.

Now, i'm gonna assume that "stand alone" means my dvd player right?

and here is my standard reply to player compatibility:

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

You've got a litey, get some plus format-quality media and booktype them to dvd rom. Here's the utility that you may need to booktype them:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm

Nero can booktype some drives. DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn can also booktype.K-probe is for Lite-on drives as well.

If none of them work, try that lite-on utility. I'm not sure how it works, but you basically want to change the setting from DVD+R to Dvd-rom. Those no disc errors should disappear after booktyping them.

chop2113: What's the brand name and model # of your burner?

Only +R,+RW,and +R DL media can be booktyped.

Not all drives support booktyping, and Nero won't booktype some drives that have that capability. Some drives will booktype +R dl media only. There's other utilities that may be used: Plextools,q suite,DVD Decrypter,ImgBurn, and lite-on has their own booktyping utility.

Also,Nero won't tell me if my backups are actually booktyped. Dvdidentifier and dvdinfopro will tell you if thay are actually booktyped.

Any issues with Nero,I do an uninstall, run Nero cleantool 6, reload Nero, and leave out the incd packets. Cleantool is suppose to remove all remnants of Nero off your pc.

Here's where you can get cleantool 6 and 7- depending on the version of Nero you have.

I don't mess with external drives. That model of sony is unlikely to support booktyping-also called bit-setting. The sony drives that are rebadged benqs and lite-ons have the booktyping capability- DRU-700/710/800/810/820

When your burner spits out your disc and give you a no disc or illegal disc error-usually a firmware update is needed,if there's a newer version available.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2113

Latest version is UYS3 or if it's a dell- UDS2.

Use Nero infotool to find the current firmware version of your sony drive, most likely UYS2?.
