I download movies which show in a widescreen or letterbox view.

Before burning to DVD, is there any way to change them to a full screen mode for viewing?

Thanks for any help

Yes you can and you should do this during the encoding/conversion process.
ConvertXtoDVD can do this.
Open ConvertX, select Settings > TV Format.
Change the "TV Screen" menu from Automatic to 4:3 Full screen.
Add your downloaded files and convert.

This is about the easiest way to do this. Other programs can do this as well, Nero Vision is one of them.
What are you using?

I am using Nero 6.0 version - where would the settings change be made?

I found the settings window and changed aspect to 4:3 from automatic,
however when I watch the preview screen, it still shows as letterbox.

Would this be the INPUT view and the OUTPUT burnt disk will be shown as full screen?

BTW, the whole convert and burn time has doubled (from 1 hr to 2:10)

If you are using NeroVision then you need to make the change like you did and then when Nero asks if you want this to be the new default setting, select Yes.
Nero tends to jump out of this setting each time you move from one screen to the next.
I'm using Nero 7 but have 6 on another PC. I'll go take a look but I think it's the same.

It is going to make the process a lot longer. Try some short clips until you know for sure it will work correctly. Just burn them to your HDD and you can take a look with your media player.

Converting from 16:9 to 4:3 will give you 1 of 2 results. It will make the movie distorted (It will push the sides into the center till it fits the 4:3 aspect ratio) or cut off the sides of the widescreen DVD.

I would recommend you stick to the processes you are doing now and click the zoom button on the remote control of the DVD player to zoom in on the movie making it fit your screen a little better.

If the converting from 16:9 to 4:3 distorts the movie you will not be happy. If it cuts the sides off you will in a way get the same results as what you would get if you just click the zoom option on the remote. Which if you click the zoom button on the remote you will save that extra time it is taking to convert from 16:9 to 4:3.

Well! Whoopie!

The best deal is to use the zoom button on the remote - gives
X2,X3,X4.

I forgot that because I have been using a RCA learning remote for 90% of my functions, but did not program zoom in my DVD player function.

Thanks for the help - this makes my wife happy - she hates widescreen viewing
