This error is usually due to...

Copy Protection it can not decrypt off the DVD -- (Get an up to date ripper DVDFab Decrypter/RipIT4ME/AnyDVD)

Scratched DVD -- (Try to repair it with a repair kit)

Dirty/Smugged DVD -- (Clean the DVD)

defective DVD (Bad Press) -- (Exchange it for a non-defective 1)

Heres a few guides for you to try out...

ok,

my programs including dvd fav are all up to date
the dvd is not defective or scratched
it is not smudged, i cleaned it off.

now in regards to those guides, two of them start off using DVD fab decryptor, which is not working for my dvd (monk season 2 disc 1)

i tried the third, using PGCedit with the plugin, and that gave me the messages "cannot find any protected title in this DVD! if you see this window, the DVD is probaly not protected by ARccOS. You have just an ordinatry I/O error. Try to clean the disc or replace it"

How do you know if the DVD is not defective?

Try to exchange it for a new 1.

1 of those guides should work for you if you have all programs installed correctly and follow the guide syep by step.

You can't tell if a disc is defective (bad pressing), by looking at it.
X Men 3 was not a problem to do. I did it using Shrink w/Nero, and AnyDVD running in the background. Don't know about Monk, but shouldn't be a problem. The only dvds out there, that can't be copied right now, are the new HD DVD and Blu-ray movies. Give it time, and you'll be able to do them too.

Check here: http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php to see if there's an update for your firmware. Rom drive and burner, if you have both. If discs are too old to exchange, maybe a friend has the same movie? You can try his/hers.
Good luck!

You can watch a movie that seems to not be defective but when you try to rip the DVD it can have problems if it is defective. It might not show up on playback but can when trying to rip and backup.

That is true. The player will overlook the defect, but the ripping software, and burner won't.
