My DVD writer has become really pathetic. It burnt CDs fine. Then I tried burning a DVD with it but it just kept giving the optimum power calibration error. So, as suggested on all sites, I upgraded the firmware. Since then it has been a riot! It rejects every second CD, the brands that it accepted before. Out of ten CDs, it writes one, for the rest, it just says in the end, "Could not perform end track".

I have spoilt 10 discs. It's painful. Please help!

The log file is below:

Hello.

Here are some issues based on a quick scan of your log.

Unless you have a burning need for InCD, use the Nero InCD Clean Tool and remove it. It can be a real troublemaker.

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/InCD_Clean_Tool.html

You're using a very old version of Nero 6. Write down your program serial number and then uninstall your current version. Next download and run the Nero 6 Clean Tool:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Then download and install both 6.6.0.18 packages:

Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe
Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

What size hard drive do you have and how much free space is available? Delete any unnecessary files and clear your internet cache and then defrag your drive and see if that helps.

You're using Moser Baer media which isn't the best.

You might want to try a somewhat slower burning speed with this media.

You have a limited amount of memory in your system. Be sure to shutdown any unnecessary programs or get some more memory.

Hi,

This just sounds like issues with the programs and drivers I am using. However, that is not the case. I tried burning a CD using K3B on Ubuntu Linux 6.06.1 and even that does not work. The Endtrack fails for the same.

I have always been using Moser Baer, they are the best available here. Other brands available are - imation, Sony etc. Which one should I try?

I have a few GB of hard disk space free. The memory is 256MB and I close all programs before burning a disk. It still does not work. It did work before I did that firmware upgrade.

I will try all those steps you listed. If it still doesn't work, I guess I have to take it to a Sony service centre. :(

Thanks.

Hello.

Yes the error is occurring at the very end of the process. It may be either media or hardware related. It'll be a process of elimination to find the cause. InCD can cause the problem you describe, but if you've tried burning in Linux with the same results, it's not likely the culprit here. Updating the firmware wouldn't seem to be the problem either but you could reflash or reflash the older version that worked.

As to other media, The Sony seems to be the best of the bunch you mentioned.

You might try burning just a little data to the CD and see if that works or try a CD-RW.

If you have access to another system, you might try installing your burner in that one and see if it works OK with different media. If it doesn't work, the burner is likely bad.

Power calibration errors are usually either the result of bad hardware or media. I'd be tempted to lean toward bad hardware since it isn't working with Linus either, but if you're using the same media, media cannot be ruled out yet.

Keep us in the loop as to your progess.

Well I've taken it out of the machine and will take it for repair. It is not a media issue either, I have burnt with Moser Baer before I upgraded the firmware. I tried downgrading to old firmware but that gave an error too. In fact I think I got a system error with it. :(

Very common for the DVD laser to crap out before the CD one.

The two most common reasons for this is a dirty laser lens in the drive or a drive is going bad. As a first step, try cleaning the laser lens.

The initial blinking that you see when you insert a disc in the drive is called Optical Power Check (OPC) as you noted. During the OPC, the drive is checking the media for various things including reflectivity, MID etc. If the test does not pass, the drive indicates no media. When a laser is dirty or starting to fail, the OPC starts to fail more and more frequently.

I've never seen this fixed by firmware updates, especially when you are using media that has always worked fine.

Actually, the first time I tried to burn a DVD was a few days back. I bought this more than a year ago but DVDs were not available in my area. By the time I got some DVDs and tried it out, the DVD burning wasn't working. So I tried upgrading the firmware and now I can't even burn CDs. Oh well, I guess it's Rs. 4.5K down the drain if I can't get it fixed for cheap. :(
