Hi, I just want to start by saying "this is one of the best forums on the net".
However, I haven't been able to find anyone who's had these problems I've got.
I've recently ditched my old PIII 450 WinME computer for an Athlon 2000+ WinXP computer, keeping only my PlexWriter 12/10/32A drive (it has had no prior problems).
BIOS detects the drive.
Windows Detects the drive.
Great.
Now, for absolutely no known reason, several discs which worked on my old machine, now cause the drive to do strange things (Audio CDs, and CDR-Audio CDs).
Firstly, the big problem:
When Windows Media Player is playing an Audio CD, or Windows Explorer searches particular discs, the Plextor drive is suddenly not detected by the computer. It vanishes. So the comp needs to be restarted to detect it again.
On top of that, certain Multimedia Discs and Games discs cannot run .exe files that reside within folders, making it impossible to install games or run multimedia menus. I just get an error saying "cannot find...", when it is in the folder, and has worked on my old computer!?
As if that wasn't bad enough, I used to be able to extract audio from the CD using my Audio Editing Software, but now that doesn't work either. Equally bizarre, is that my soundcard insists that my CD channel is in fact a WAVE channel.
And, yes another problem . . . I could not get WinXP to boot from the CD. I had to install WinME first, then upgrade (it really was the only way).
This is all very odd, but I'm also experiencing problems in writing discs every two out of three times.
Can anyone help, or make any suggestions?
I'm considering putting WinME on my second drive, and dualbooting when I need to write, but surely I shouldn't have to!?
My system spec:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
ASUS A7V333
512MB DDR RAM
PlexWriter 12/10/32A (Latest Firmware)
Soundblaster Live! 1024
Windows XP Pro 2002 (No SP1 - Was told not to)
Windows Media Player 8.00.00.4477
Nero Burning ROM 5.5.10.28

Be sure your ide cable connected to your Plexy is firmly attached(mobo to) and your jumper settings are correct m8. I can relate the Plexy (or any other rom) not being able to play "particular" pc games. I would update to Service Pack 1 and update WPM> 9x. Have you tried Plex Tools Pro?
Autorun enabled?
Quote: I could not get WinXP to boot from the CD. I had to install WinME first, then upgrade (it really was the only way).
Did you change your boot sequence in your BIOS setup (floppy 1st)?
I would stay away from Windoze Me as this is by far the most buggiest o\s I've ever run

Thanks for replying Shoey,
I'll check the cable as soon as I turn my computer off (due in a day or two).
Jumper settings seem correct. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to use the drive most of the time surely!?
As for not reading particular games . . . it is odd that the drive played those games that I had used in my prior system fine, but not on my new machine, isn't it!? We're talking the same graphics card too (Matrox G400).
As for Windows Media Player 9, isn't it supposed to be really tempremental!?
And the Service Pack 1 . . . isn't that supposed to be a bit dodgy too? Apparently it only seals alot of security patches, which doesn't bother me, as it isn't online.
As for booting, yes. I changed the boot sequence to boot fro mthe CDROM Drive. XP tried installing, but had serious problems copying files across then froze. Same when I tried a friends Windows 2000 disc. Quite a coinsidence that they both use boot sectors on the discs, and I can't get either to boot properly from the CD.
As for Windows ME, I too know countless people that steered clear of it. Personally, I had trouble installing Win98 second addition a long time ago, so tried WinME. Had worked great for me since, so I stuck with it. Not to mention, it seems to be the only way to boot XP.
I've also found out why my CD channel was playing through the WAVE channel too . . . seems you need to de-select digital audio in the playback options. How silly.
Thanks again Shoey.

I'm running SP 1& WMP 9.x and my system runs like a charm m8. As far as games that use to play on a different o\s i can relate as my daughters "old games" won't install on WinXP but they play fine on Win2k Pro.
