Hi Tammy41
You might just need an update the firmware on the burner if there is a newer one.
What's the make, model and firmware version of the burner? If you burning from Shrink sounds like you may have Nero.
If you do then go to Nero ToolKit>InfoTool. The drop down will have the make & model. The drive tab has a field for the firmware version.

Drop the burn speed down to 8x too.

For the media Sony is good - for Maxell look for made in Japan only - Memorex well just skip them all together. Other good ones would be Verbatim or made in Japan only Fuji.

The newest updated firmware for your DVD drive is JWS6 Which you can get at the link below...

http://www.memorex.com/downloads/software/JWS6.zip

You will have to use a compression program like WinRAR to extract the file from the RAR file which it is packed into. Then just run the executable file to upgrade your drive to the updated firmware.

Below is a nice guide on hot to use DVDFab decrypter with VobBlanker and DVD Shrink to backup your DVD. Follow it and you should get a pretty good handle on how the programs work and where to change options at.

I uploaded the firmware update to my server so click on the link below and you should be able to download it. (If it does not start look at the top part of your browser under the toolbar and make sure that the browser is not keeping it from being downloaded. If you see a little yellow type bar across the top of the browser then right click on it and choose to download file.

http://webpages.charter.net/larrylje/JWS6.EXE

Let me know when you have the firmware file so I can take it off my site.

For other options in DVD Shrink that could help your backup copy look below...

You might want to try and custom set the output size of the DVD to 4360. This will keep the DVD from being burnt to close to the edge of the media. Do this by doing the below steps...

To change the burn speed follow the steps below (It is best to burn at half the rated speed. So if you have 16x media burn at 8x. You really do not want to go below 4x. So if your media is 4x or 8x then burn at 4x)...

After you setup the DVD to be backed up and you click on the backup button then the following window comes up which I give steps below that tells you how to change the speed when this window appers...

I hope this covers most of what you wanted and hope it clears up your DVD backup problems.
