Help with new Philips dvdr3380

Just recently bought a Philips dvd recorder and before I either throw it out of the window or take it back to shop maybe someone out there can help.

We have connected the player up, found the sky channel in the channel search (which wasnt easy).

We are now trying to record... we put an empty DVD-RW disc in and it comes up saying Updating.... for ages it says this.

It then comes up with our channel we have stored which we called sky. (We dont have any other channels stored as we dont have an external aerial so have to rely on our sky box.)

We then press the record source button as told in manual it then thinks about it a bit longer and starts to count down. It then stops after a couple of minutes with an error message. We have tried a number of discs. Sometimes it freezes and we have to turn it off and on again at the wall.

Can anyone help??
