A week ago, i was burning dvds fine. All of a sudden i get an error message. Ive been seeing people with the same problem, the drive thinking the blank dvd is a cd and it saying there is 0 bytes on it. I dont want to hear about bad media, ive used tdk, sony, memorex, verbatim, everything. The media is fine. I can burn cds perfectly without any error messages. Clone DVD will give me a write error as well, saying that the media is bad, but I know for sure that my blanks are fine. I re-installed windows, and i updated my drivers, still no luck. Should i just plan on purchasing a new burner. This one is almost 4 years old and ive probably burnt over 300 dvds and over 1000 cds. So it has been through a lot.

Hi laneo88
Just mho - but yep time for a new burner.
Fours old and no firmware updates for over 2 years - so newer media and this drive will more than likely not get along.

Drives are not nearly as much as they were 4 years ago. A good LiteOn is around $30-35.

yeah i updated my drivers a while back, but that is it. I never did anything else. I figured with over 300 dvds burnt and over 1000 cds burnt the drive is a bit damaged. heh. Hopefully a new drive will fix my problems, cause i see that people have this problem quite a bit. the weird part is ive been using new verbatims for awhile and all of a sudden it just "crapped" out. I hope this fixes my problem, because I really want to get back in to burning dvd's again.

I re-installed windows
For XP:
Try going through device manager under cdrom/dvd rom drives-open up the tree to locate that sony drive.

Double click the sony drive/click drivers tab/uninstall/and reboot. See if it'll recognize your blank dvd media.

The amount of total burns for a drive varies. If using the same drive for ripping and burning, they will wear out quicker. If using a separate drive for the ripping,a DVD-RW drive will last a very long time for burning purposes only. I got over 3500+ backups from my original benq 1620 and now using it as a reader on my backup pc. The dvd-rom drive that I swapped out for the old 1620 was only 22 months old.

Dvd drives are very cheap. A decent dvd-rom runs as low as $20 and you can get a quality burner for well under $40. Also makes the dvd backup process a whole lot sweeter.
