i have the installer and bootloader on a memory stick pro but whenever i select "install other os" and click ok to the card the screen goes blank and stays blank forever, i then have to hard reset or powerdown which i dont like doing.. i've tried redownload each file in case of corruption to no avail. anyone else have this?
Are you following the guide for your installation? You only need to have one file in your memory card if you're following the guide, and that file is otheros.self.

You may need to re-read step 1.1.

what is the code for the kboot console to access the memory stick? i want to try to install linux that way.

I'm assuming that if you got kboot up and running and are ready for the next step, that you got the otheros installed, correct? I'm not sure if you can mount drives in kboot. I'd imagine that it'd be the same commands to mount drives in linux.

Do you want to install using this method because you do not have a DVD burner to burn the Fedora ISO?

you might want to try something like.
Quote:
mkdir /mnt/memstick
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/memstick
if that gives an error you should try /dev/sdc1 or so on.

a simple
Quote:
ls -l /mnt/memstick
should list the contents.

I can't test this right now without a ps3 but /dev/sdb should be what the stick is detected at. /dev/sda is the internal hard disk and /dev/sda1 identifies it as the first partition on it, /dev/sdb is the second drive detected (now I know my A-B-Cs...) with the same number one to identify the first partition.

Similar mounting instructions should let you mount an image if you are trying to install without a DVD like toxicfish was asking.
Quote:
mount -o loop /mnt/memstick/FC-5-ppc-DVD.iso /mnt/dvd
or is it /mnt/cdrom ... you can try both I guess and if the directory doesn't exist just mkdir it like before.

You think updating to v.1.11 will not let us run this or the oportunity of loading iso's? I actually have had a ps3 since 4pm and have not touched it lol.

If the update disabled loading another OS it would be a dumb move from sony.

after update 1.11, the installer installed. when i opened kboot to install gentoo it said "no vrs found" which means no volume recognition sequence is on the cd. i read cd's can only have those if burned with a certain software. does anyone know what one could do so?

and thanks for the help on the mem card situation. i'll let you guys know. but it seems to already mount the card because when it is turned on in otheros mode the card slot is not on untill boot begins processes. maybe it is already mounted and i just the the directory and how to tell it to install whats on the card.

I'll have my Japanese 20g PS3 on Friday, I know you only need 10g for the Linux partition but is the other 10g enough for the PS3? Should I wait till YDL comes out in Dec, is there going to be a big difference between Fedora and Yellow Dog? Should I get a bigger HDD first? Thanks for the help

I'm downloading a ISO of Yellow Dog v5, is it going to be better then Fedora Core 5? I read it's based on fedora so I'm guessing it should be better and the install should be just about the same. Has any one used Yellow Dog?

From what I read about Yellow Dog it's Fedora with added features....A "Enhanced" Version. So if you have the TV to support it, then why not go with the better OS.

I am curious about yellow dog, but it's going to do me no good to have it if I don't even know how to use linux properly. I would suggest that if you already are running fedora to keep it. My friend at the kinko's just give me a print out of the linux bible last night and I'm going to study it all today.

I want to get proficiant and running apps through the command terminal and when I get the basics done, upgrade to yellow dog.

Hey Honda, I'm going to go through the guides off the Terra soft site and see if I can find an install guide. That and read through that pdf you linked for us. Try to do it on your own and if I can help you, I will.

I only have a 20gb so I think I'm going to wait for a bigger HDD. Cause after the partition it only leaves about 6.5gb to the PS3 side which ain't much so after the one game, one cd and 2 demos I'll only have ~3gb (13gb right now). Plus I only have a SDTV so I don't know if I only want text mode, if what I read about you haveing to have 720p or better. If some one gets the GUI working on a SDTV 480, then I'll try it....maybe I'll be the ginny pie?!? I burnt the ISO to a disc so it's ready.

I went on my friends TV and loaded Yellow Dog and it looks great and runs good. The install took about 1 1/2 hours from start to finish. I love the E17 Desktop. Everything is included ie..firefox, thunderbird, media player, IM...every thing.

BTW I'm typing this on my PS3

Congradulations on getting Yellow Dog to run man.

I had read about that E17 desktop stuff but I still hadn't seen any screen shots. I admit you rose my curiosity and actually I'm in the middle of my installation aswell :)

I've found so far that I did not need to reformat the hard drive for this upgrade which saved me a lot of time I think. Since we have already installed kboot, we can just continue from there. The only thing is that I had to do the installation in "installtext" mode (Note: see page 6 of terrasoft yellow dog installation manual.) Since yellow dog's installation program allows for formatting partitions on its own, I just used Yellow dog's utility.

I will be back online later on today when I wake up. I wonder how this new desktop will look...

Well I went thought the installation without a hitch but I guess even the command terminal is in 720p because I cannot see anything on my screen past when kboot is done. I can tell the PS3 is booting Yellow Dog because all the devices connected flash on and off during the booting sequence, so I know something is going on...

Good thing is that you can still set your PS3 back to the game os when the "kboot:" prompt first comes on the screen.

@dachno-i've got my wireless usb keyboard and mouse and so far they've been great; i've not yet encountered a problem. however, i did notice that the backspace has a teeny bit more lag than when u backspace with the controller. it isn't really important but i thought i would let u know

use the installtext option for sub-720p sets.

i figured out how to get past the no vrs thing. i burned a version of the disk in udf format so it would be seen, but when the install started it told me the yellow dgo cd was not in. i put in the old cdfs copy and it worked fine. its installing now.

"no vrs found" is fine, it came up twice for me...I'm guess your screen went blank after that? Between "no vrs found" and the screen going blank this should have come up <kboot> after that you need press "TAB" until you see installtext. You only have 10 seconds to press TAB after that time it do the default install. Is your TV a HDTV or SDTV? When you do the installtext it will do the full install but if your TV is not 720p or better you can not get to the GUI. when the install starts it will ask you if you want to do an "integrity check on the CD" or something like that. Press no, because you burnt the disc so it will fail the test. after that select "Remove all linux partitions", this will not do anything to the game side of PS3. After the install you will get the Kboot again TAB untill you get to "ydltext" unless you have a HDTV TAB to YDL.

I hope this helps. By the way my PS3 name is USMCEnglish, you can add me if you need more help
