I recently decided to install YDL 5.0 on my PS3.
After downloading the iso using my school's broadband connection (I have 28.8 dial-up at home) and transferring the file to my ipod's hard drive, I brought it home to my computer.
First I tried to copy/cut the iso from my ipod onto my computer's hard drive, but it says that it can't copy it because the parameter is incorrect.
When I try burning the iso to a disc (directly from my ipod) it says that the image file is unsupported or incorrect. I tried with various programs, including DVD Decrypter, Alcohol 120%, and Nero.
I just spend hours downloading this and I'm sure that the download fully completed. I got the file from a public mirror listed on terrasoft's site. Anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it? I really don't want to pay 50 bucks to buy the cd when I could get it free.
Also, is it necessary to have a USB keyboard when installing YDL?

i read somewhere that if you have ydl installed in your ps3, you wont be able to go online unless you use a wired connection. i have a 60gb ps3 and its pretty far from my router. is there any other way of doing this with wifi?

By doing a wireless bridge. You plug the ethernet from your PS3 into a wireless bridge, and route the wireless bridge to your wireless router. Also called "wireless gaming adapters", alot of people did this with their original Xbox or PS2.
It's a waste of your PS3's 802.11g, but YDL5 doesn't currently support it with the 12/08/2006 release. Maybe YDL will get better this year with RapidMind, but I'll stick with FC6 until I see what TerraSoft releases next.

I'm confused. Should I install Fedora Core 5 or Yellow Dog Linux 5.0? Are they the same thing? If they're different, which one will most likely be used to play backups?

Technically any usb keyboard should work. Your keyboard may use non-standard drivers, hence your compatabilty problem. Do you have access to another brand of keyboard that you could try out?
For your problems with your blurry tv... It may be because of the cables you are using. If you are using the composite ones it came with, that is most likely your problem. I would invest in a set of component or HDMI cables since you have access to an HD set. At the very least you should use a set of s-video cables.

If you are a beginner, you should start with fedora since YDL is more specialized. YDL also requires a high resolution to be displayed, so it will not work if you have an SD set.
I'd also like to remind everyone that Fedora and YDL are OSs and not just methods of running backup games. It would be good to pick up a book on linux and read up a little on installing programs, as it can be quite a task if you are learning this new OS.

Are you sure that you need a HDTV to run YDL? That's the first I've heard of this and I just want to confirm that it's true.

I did some research and found this on the official YDL installation guide:
Quote: Attach your PS3 to a hi-definition TV or monitor which offers an HDMI
(digital) or Component (5 RCA jacks) cable. Composite (yellow RCA
jack) is not supported as the resolution is too low.
I think my TV has places to stick component cables (it's not HD though), so I think it will still work (right?). But I'm beginning to think it would be better for me to wait to install it on my PS3. My reasons are:
1) I would need to buy a USB keyboard (I already have a USB mouse)
2) I would need to buy PS2/PS3 component A/V cables
3) I (possibly) would need to buy a new HD TV just to run the OS
4) As of right now, there's no way to back up games using the OS, which is the primary reason for me wanting to install it.
If I need a HDTV to run it, I pretty much have to wait. I don't have the grand or however much it costs to get one. And if I did get one, I would probably go straight for one which could do 1080p, so that I wouldn't have to upgrade later.

When I was following the guide to transfer the ISO image to PC through network from ps3news.com shown below:
"Next we need to bring up the PS3 Linux side of the transfer, but before opening the integrated gFTP client in Linux FC5 we need to ensure that your eth0 is ACTIVE. To do this, boot up PS3 Linux FC5 and at THIS prompt type in service httpd start and press ENTER on your USB keyboard. You should now be at THIS screen, and simply select Ethernet followed by entering eth0 for both the Name and Device as shown HERE along with selecting/enabling Use DHCP. Once you press ENTER for "OK" you will be back to THIS screen so select Exit and press ENTER."
I was not able to see this screen:

It just show me:
Starting httpd: [ OK ]
How can I get to the Network Configure screen?
Please advice... Thanks.

I know that to use YDL with a PS3, you have to have a HDTV (because the software doesn't support lower resolutions, or something). It this the same thing with Fedora Core 5?

No, fedora does not require higher resolutions. It works find on an SDTV.
@Astroboy
I just got back my ps3 from repairs at sony this weekend... I will go though the installation process this weekend to try to emulate your situation.

FYI I haven't had Fedora 5 Linux on my PS3 since December (and it was a pain to install) so I don't by any means have all the answers. I never tried YDL. I'm tired of people asking questions and no one responding. Sorry to say this is the best I've got (so don't hate).
Quote: When I typed cd/usr/bin it said that is not a directory.
When I typed ps3videomode -v 131 it says that it is not a command.
I had this problem too. Try reinstalling Fedora with the full install or download a different iso image. Sorry, I don't remember which worked. If I find it, I will share the information here.

No. I got it to work on my standard set just fine. If you encounter issues, I believe there is an easy way to change resolution (along the lines of changing your network preferences). Search for something about "ps3videomode".
Quote: I typed startx and the ps3 said -bash: startx: command not found.

There are many different versions of OtherOS out there. I had this problem too and I downloaded another version of OtherOS and had to start over again from Step 4 Install Kboot. Infact, I did this at least three times, because (around launch time) there were so many versions of OtherOS out there. Sorry, I don't remember which one worked. If I find it on my hard drive, I will share it here. [Also, be sure you have the right Linux Add-on and Fedora Core 5 PPC discs.]
Quote: How can I get to the Network Configure screen?
I did not follow that guide. Can you pick up Step 6 of this guide? That should get you to the Setup Agent and Network Configuration screen.
I was never able to run any games (like Quake 3 Arena) and was never able to get the media functionality I was looking for (like VLC player) so I got rid of Fedora. If anyone has got the answers, please post, these people need help.
Finally, thank you ToxicFish for the guide.

I'm having problem when installing Fedora Core 6. After the installation is done. I continued to login as usual and when I type "startx" and enter. The screen is fill with "fuzzy" lines and I'm not able to read what is on the screen.
By the way, I'm using plasma with HDMI connection. Before I install Fedora Core 6, I'm using Fedora Core 5 with no such screen problems. What is cause of these "fuzzy" lines and how can I rectify the problem?
Please advice....
Thank you....

Hi peeps my first post here.
I've installed Fedora Core 5 PPC on my UK PS3 but when I inserted the add on CD and pressed y it told me that install failed.
Is there anyway to load this with a command?

I've tried four different "otheros.self" downloads and nothing has worked. I did install the Linux bootloader (kboot download), but I can't seem to find an otheros file that my PS3 will recognize. I'm starting to get very frustrated.
If anyone can link, or point in the direction of where they got their otheros file, please do so. It would be very appreciated.

try www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html
I sorted my problem as far as the add on Cd is concernred. I was pressing y too early, the CD hadn't initialised.
So all installed and I've chosen my root password but after a reboot I'm left at the kboot prompt still. any ideas?
