Hi discman 1
Have you turned off your firewall and antivirus during installation?

I had a google around and found this:
We had a similar problem installing IE 7.0 at first. We found that the problem was caused by having the tool bars locked in the previous version of IE.
To check if you have the tool bars locked , right click on the Flag in the upper right hand corner just below the Minimize/ Maximize area. A small window will open to show your current tool bars checked and whether you have the tool bars locked. If you do then IE 7.0 will not install until you unlock your tool bars.
Its news to me but it may be of use.
Regards

Ok,you may like to try this if you haven't done so. Right click on the downloaded IE installation file, select properties, then select unblock.

When you tried the install in safe mode did you try it with networking support and did you get any files? If so did you get any access denied errors or write errors?

i have the exact problem. i received today the security update for IE7. i have rc1 too and it went the exact same way. the problem is i had spyware terminator on that prevented the registry to be altered. i uninstalled spyware t.now though:
i cannot uninstall ie from control panel;
i cannot reinstall the application, same message;
ie is a half browser as it misses menú file, toolbar and i see no flags.
i had a message after the failed installation to go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925.
but i am not confident to alter the registry.
what should i do?
help please

thanks, but one needs to uninstall ie7 first, which i was able to do with some difficulties. so it rolled back to ie6, which i will keep as a optional, making of Firefox the default browser.
i won' t download ie7 anymore as it is not a simple browser, but if i understood well it becomes an integrated part of the os. ciao
