Hi I had my xbox flashed by a guy at a computer fair a month or so bck and he put xtreme 3.0 or 3.3 on I cant remember which. I've been on xbox live only a few times with it all the rest of the time i unplug my network cable, I plugged it in today because I've got the day of work and facied a session on pes6 on live, i plugged it in and was asked to update.
I updated not long back when i put nfs carbon in (or cod3 cant remember which).
So my question is if i update am i screwed and need my fw re-flashing?
Can somebody answer quick cos my precious and rare day off is ticking away?
cheers bremner

he probably got that error when the "big update" was out around haloween. many people had problems with that. even people that didnt have their firmware flashed. but all he should have done to fix taht problem was reflash the firmware.

That error was a "new drive/old firmware" issue and has been resolved. If you got a ms25 drive then you're ok with 3/3.3. If you have an ms28 drive, you'll want to run 4.0 or up. Heres a link about the problem: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=559583 and heres some info from it: Quote: What this means for Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 drives (in consoles made after ~ end may 2006) is that if the drive was originally loaded with the MS25 firmware (often referred to as an 'MS25 drive') it should work fine with C4E Xtreme v3.3 (based on MS25), but not with C4E Xtreme v4.2 (based on MS28) as that's a version change. On a drive originally loaded with the MS28 firmware (often referred to as an 'MS28 drive') anything below C4E Xtreme v4.0 will not work as v3.3 and below are based on MS25.

Just took my 360 apart and on the drive it says "F/W=ms21" but that is on a sticker over the top of one saying ms19.
So obviosly my drive is a ms21 but you didnt mention that before you just mentioned ms25 and ms28, will this still be fine to update?
And also due to how pi$$ easy it is to get inside one of these things im gonna buy a sata card and update it myself from now on and sort my mates out but do i need to reflash with original fw before flashing with 4.0 or can i just flash straight over 3.0/3.3?

You got your's around launch?
In a nutshell... you can have a old drive with new firmware, but you can't have a new drive with old firmware. The hacked firmware is based on (created from) the original firmware.
Xtreme 4.0 is based on ms28 firmware. So ms28 needs 4.0 or up. But the older ms drives are fine running newer firmware. So you should be good with what you've got installed.
You'll need your orig.bin before you can reflash. Did you happen to get that when you got it flashed? With out it you're sol. And yes, you can just flash over top 3.3.

2) my 360 has a ms21 drive and fw 3.0 or 3.3 can i flash over with 4.0 without my orig bin?
3) my mate has ??? drive and fw ??? and doesnt have his orig bin can he just flashover without orig bin?

i think he can use another persons orig.bin as long as he finds someone with a ms21 drive. reasoning behind this is i gave a guy my orig.bin when he lost his, and it worked in the making of the hacked fw. so i would assume it would work for him also.

I don't think so.
Each drive has an unique key (which is paired up with the motherboard somehow) which is in the firmware. This key needs to be copied from your orig.bin and pasted into the modded firmware before the modded firmware can be flashed to the drive.
If each key wasn't unique to each 360, then editing the modded firmware before you flash the drive wouldn't be a necessary process.

i would assume that if you could obtain a orig.bin from a ms21 fw and then copied the dvd key(4000-line before 4400) from hacked firmware to the orig.bin, and you should be ok, i might have ms21 fw, i will check and let you know, i got mine the second batch after launch, i think my manufacturing date is feb 06.

You know, I've thought about that, too. I don't see why that couldn't be done, but if it were that easy how come it's never been posted before.
Plus, it'll be a job getting the modded firmware off the drive. Not impossible... but which firmware is it, did the modder change the name, etc. You'll need to know if it's "x33.bin, x32.bin, modified.bin", etc., etc. See what I'm getting at?

I'll let you know exactly whats on it this afternoon, gotta go and buy a cheap sata hdd cos got a raid array setup and only 2 sata ports.
the guy who flashed my 360 originally is sending my bin file over tommorow morning.
Is there any way of knowing that the bin file he sends me is definatly for my drive?
Quote: and then copied the dvd key(4000-line before 4400) from hacked firmware to the orig.bin
so what your saying is if i could get the dvd key from the modded fw already on my 360 i wont need my orig.bin file?

Spent all last night messing around with my mates 360.
First tried to read the current firmware off his system with no luck, it would detect the drive but wouldnt read.
After a couple of hours doing that I came on here and snooped around a bit and found a link to a vid on youtube using the sam read write software. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZOMxLtCUA8 )
This did read and write the firmware but he was still getting error 66 so we are now waiting on the guy who originally flashed our 360's to send our original firmwares. IF he sends them I'll let you know how we get on.
But in the mean time can somebody read the above posts and tell me if its safe to update MY 360 on xbl?
