I having been burning movie files that i converted from AVI to dvd files using vso to dvd. I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 Basic VCD Edition to burn them to disc after being converted. They always burn successfully or at least the program says so with no errors or anything. Some will play just fine others will not read in a dvd player or the computer. The computer drive doesnt even register that there is a disc in the drive, the dvd player says unknown disc. It seems like it is every other time I burn a dvd this happens. I can burn a copy and it will work, then make a second copy from the same exact files the same exact way and it doesnt work, and then the third time it may or may not work properly again. Can anyone help me please? I am very frustrated and tired of wasting disc. Thanks!!

Hi.

Do you know who makes the media you're using? Try to use decent quality CD media and don't try to burn at max speed. If you're using bargain priced media, inconsistency is not unexpected. Also make sure your firmware is up to date.

I am using Fuji Media and they are only writing a 4x speed. I saw something about udating firmware but I wasnt sure what brand mine is. The drive is HL-DT-ST DVD +- RW GSA-H21N. I downloaded Nero after posting this and burned 4 dvds and they have all worked. Could it be the Roxio program.. I only used it because it was what was loaded on the computer when I got it.

So you're burning DVDs. The best quality are Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony disks.

Fuji disks can be good or bad depending on who actually manufactured them. If they are labeled as made in Japan, they are most excellent; otherwise, not so much. If you want you can download DVD Identifier to determine who actually made the disk.

Your burner is manufactured for Dell by LG. The newest firmware I located after a quick search seems to be version A106 here:

DVD Identifier will tell you your firmware version as well. The firmware version is the 4 characters following the name/ID of the drive.

It's hard to say what the problem is without a lot more info which we don't have. You can run into problems having both Roxio and Nero on the same system. If you run into problems in the future, you may want to uninstall Roxio and run the Roxio Zapper.

Try your next few with Nero, if they continue to work drop Roxio, as was posted.

Roxio has 2 burn menus. One for computers with roxio installed and one for the rest of the world. If you dont turn on the feature to allow Roxio to burn to other computers and media it will not work, even in other computers.

So I found out that I have firmare version A105 so I downloaded the newer A106. When I downloaded Nero and saw that it worked, then I uninstaled Roxio. I dont have both of them of my system anymore. I have made about 8 dvds now and all of them have turned out fine on Nero. I believe I will just stick to that. Thank you all so much for your help.
